I am interested in secret underground London. I have been told there is a secret tunnel from Buckingham Palace to Paddington Station. It was built during the second world war in case we were invaded. The Royal family could then get to Paddington, train to the west coast, then boat to North America. Does anybody kno...

Why do they 'kangaroo start'?

Can any Tube drivers / electrical engineers out there tell me why underground trains often do a “kangaroo start” when they’re moving off – a lurch that is often accompanied by a loud popping sound. District/Circle line trains seem especially susceptible to this – and usually when they...

Does anyone else imagine they're in a video game when they're underground?

Not specifically lift-related but more tube in general: I find that a couple of months playing that damned Resident Evil game on the PlaySatan has left me unable to complete a tube journey on my own without idly working out a) the quickest routes from A to B to avoid the clutches of zombie commuters b) how to get in...

Why is there an old-fashioned newsagents underground?

Near Gloucester Road Underground station, if you walk along the tube tracks for two minutes (toward South Kensington on the District line) and turn left down a small passage before you reach South Kensington, there is the remains of a small shop which looks like an old fashioned newsagents. The windows are broken, a...

Has anyone else seen the 'off' man?

Riding up on the Wimbledon branch of the District Line every morning is essentially a tedious experience, as is trying to get off the train at Earl’s Court when it’s typically rammed. But, occasionally at least, the journey is made more enjoyable by a middle-aged man who, when wanting to leave the train,...

What does 'good-service' actually mean?

I recently e-mailed LUL to ask them about their policy regarding the wording on the whiteboards they use in most Tube stations to inform passengers of the status of services on all lines. I queried the widespread and irksome use of “Good service” to denote an absence of delays. Whether it’s a go...

Has anyone else come across a kind LU employee?

Having been out with Miss Diagonal for the evening for food and booze, we head home from Bermondsey station to Clapham South. On the outward journey, I asked for a return to Elephant and Castle, not knowing at that point where we’d be returning from. The clever LU ticket machine gave me a zones 2-6 travelcard....

Have you had a lovely moment on the Northern Line?

I saw a heart-warming thing on the tube the other day that I thought I would share with you all. It was in the middle of a particularly stuffy afternoon on a stalled Northern line train outside of King’s cross. The carriage was about half-full and a woman in her 50s started to cough. At first it seemed like qu...

My boyfriend desperately wants to get hold of wall maps of the London Underground, New York Subway and Moscow Metro systems. Does anyone know where you can buy them? Have been Googling but haven’t really come up with much. Babyangel

Did anyone else used to walk along the tube lines at night?

When much younger I used to love the frisson of walking along the tube lines when too drunk to sleep (room-spin, head in bin). The power goes off after 1am and apart from the occasional fox this 70 foot wide strip of London is all mine and no one else’s. Sitting on top of a signal gantry watching the summer su...

Can I just say 'thank you' to the staff at Harrow on the Hill tube station?

I just wanted to let you know that there are some helpful station staff out there after all. At the beginning of this week i was on the Metropolitan Line travelling to Harrow on the Hill Station. On the train I started to feel very dizzy and faint and my vision became blurred (due to the unbearable heat on packed...

How important is it for the train stations to be clean?

Why are tube stations closed or offering restricted services while TfL / TubeLines make them look cleaner? Surely what we all want is for the trains to run safely and efficiently? Yet the rails on the Victoria Line are so bumpy you feel like the trains are about to leap off. And all they can do is spend a fortune re...

Where are your manners, young man?

For a long time I’ve been astounded by the rudeness & selfishness of people on the tube. What has happened to a bit of courtesy and manners? I was on a packed northern line train the other day (defective train somewhere or other) totally squished, when the train duly pulled in to Angel tube station. There ...

Why the delay from Aldgate to Liverpool Street?

Does anyone actually know why it takes so insanely long for Circle and Metropolitan Line trains to leave Aldgate on their way to Liverpool Street. Admitedly, I’m not on those trains often, but when I am the 5-6 minute delay when I’m in a rush/late isn’t helpful. And it seems to happen every time. ...

Are the poles in the tube trains colour coded?

Train colours. Well, tube train inside poles actually. Are they really the same colour as the tube lines (i.e. black for Northern, red for Central, etc.) I guess the Jubilee Line is easy (silver) but is this some kind of public service for when you don’t know whether you are Circled, Districted or Met’ed...

Does anyone else have an urge to push people out of a packed tube as the doors are closing? I’m not sure why, but I’ve had an urge to do so since I started using the tube regularly 4-5 years ago (I was only 13… aaaawwwww). Of course, not any randomer, somebody who’s been irritating you/everyb...

Can anyone shed some light on the invisible Putney Green station?

On the district line platform map at Mile End station they have invented a new stop. On their map between Putney Bridge and East Putney they show a ‘Putney Green’. Is this LU being stupid, or is it just a really old map still showing a now defunct station? I keep peering out of the window on the way thro...

Just over a week ago I was travelling on the Victoria Line between Stockwell and Green Park (a very deep part of the underground, or so I am told) when the woman opposite me’s mobile phone rang. She answered and had a conversation, and even passed the phone to her son next to her at one point so ...

Why is Loyd Grossman in Covent Garden lift?

I normally get off at Holborn tube of a morning, however, I fancied a change today and got off at Covent Garden. Never again. The reason being Lloyd Grossman’s nauseating voice talking to us all in the lift telling us to visit the various attractions that CG has to offer. This is not what I want to hear at...
