Have you done all the obvious London Tourist stuff?

Yes yes, I KNOW that a lot of it is hideously overpriced, but have you actually visited the usual, obvious tourist sites that this city has to offer? Or do you feel it is all a bit commercial and beneath you, and prefer to head out to visit the Bethnal Green Museum of Quiche? A while ago I visited the Tower of Lo...

Cool markets and other places to take people new to London - anyone know any?

My cousin (age 22) has recently arrived in London from Mauritius. Being a Londoner all my life, I’m so used to seeing and experiencing London everyday, I suppose I take it all for granted. What cool places can I take her that aren’t too expensive? She’s done the National Gallery, Trafalgar Squar...

I would like to ask for some help on behalf of my brother-in-law and his wife. He is Italian – in fact, they both are – living in Italy. He can speak reasonable English, but she can only just about manage “ello” – and Ciao, of course. My – well, their – problem is where t...

I find myself possibly on the receiving end of playing general host and guide to a group of American visitors this summer (ugh, Americans). Students, to boot (ugh, students). One of them is in a motorized wheelchair, and their group leader has been asking me about how accomodating central London will be to the whe...

Wonders will never cease – apparently our huge, rickety and highly unreliable public transport system has been voted by ‘world travellers’ as the best in the world for the second year running, no less! I can’t imagine the sample was the best cross-section that could possibly have been achiev...

Can you find Roman antiquity in a barber shop basement?

In Gracechurch Street in the City there is a barbershop which has a Roman antiquity in its basement. I know because I was having my haircut when a group of German (I think) tourists came in to have a look. It’s accessed through a broom cupboard. Scipio Africanus

I’ve got some old Uni friends visiting in a few weeks. One of them wants, nay needs, to watch a mid-afternoon footy match, while the others do not. So, can anyone think of a good pub for watching football that is close to interesting stuff for tourists? Maybe somewhere in Greenwich, or South Bank, or South Ken...

Has anyone ever actually eaten at a Garfunkels or Aberdeen Steakhouse?

And if so why? No, I’m really interested cos obviously one of the first things you learn as a Londoner or incomer (along with black snot and not walking slowly down Oxford Street) is never ever EVER eat in a Garfunkels or AS cos you’ll get rat faeces served on a bed of lollo rosso and only tourists are ...

Who are London's best-loved tourists?

I’ve never had a problem with London’s tourists. Perhaps it’s because I once used to be a tour guide, or, before that, because I used to live in an area of London popular with young foreign students visiting the big city. brief wistful gaze into middle distance Hey, I even like visitors from ...

202 Things To Do Before You Leave London - what would you add?

Despite the fairly miserable assumption that everybody’s going to leave (it’s no place to raise a family, after all…), there’s at least some point to Time Out’s list. Last year’s: http://www.timeout.com/london/features/2253/1.html This year’s: http://www.timeout.com/londo...
