Most beautiful to look at, not most beautiful view from. Don’t forget they look different at night, so you could name two bridges. There’s no right or wrong answer. Personally, I think all bridges look beautiful. There’s something wonderful about all of them. Probably the presence of water. And ...

Why aren't there more river taxis?

After staring drunkenly at the river through the bottom of a pint of lager whilst wondering how to get home from the south bank to Putney, I was struck by London’s lack of water taxis, I know that there are meant to be a couple around here and there which you can catch if your father’s father was a water...

The Dutch Barge – Chelsea Bridge. Does anyone know who owns or runs the Dutch Barge and where it goes? I sailed on one called Volharding in Scotland, and would love to sail another one along the Thames. Any ideas? Paul SW11

As it appears that one’s chances of dying a slow, lingering and agonising death are increasing exponentially with the amount of time spent on the underground – does anyone know if it is actually true that you can get to Canary Wharf by boat? And if so, is it any good, how long does it take? catkiller

Is the Thames flowing in the wrong direction?

Every day on my trudge across London Bridge I look down at the murky water of the Thames below and frown because the damn thing’s flowing in the wrong direction. Is this the first sign of a psychosis or has anyone else noticed how the Thames appears to flow up stream? Please come to my rescue with a plausible ...

Thames or a bin?

So, is it better to throw your apple core (or other biodegradable food waste) into the Thames (for the fish, seagulls etc) or should I keep it until I find a bin (contributing to landfill)? I’m walking over Blackfriar’s Bridge every day and want to know what people think is best. FireIce

Has anybody else seen seals in the Thames?

I was walking across Wandsworth Bridge the other day, when my eye was caught by a large black-ish blob on the river bank. I stood there trying to work out whether it was a big tarpaulin filled with, ooh, jelly or something, when it suddenly waddled up the riverbank to a warmer spot. It was a seal! In the Thames! is ...

I have a vein on my ankle that, for whatever reason, looks remarkably like the section of the River Thames between Waterloo and Greenwhich… (except smaller and different in all the usual ways that an ankle vein is different from a capital city). Does anyone else have body parts that resemble famous London l...

Has anyone seen the 'I eat Rubbish' sign?

Ambling across the ‘ex-wobbly’ bridge the other eve, I noticed a rather large sign on the Thames stating ‘I eat rubbish’ – it turns out that they have planted giant dustbin type receptacles in the river to capture random polluting items that the hoi polloi of London town choose to throw...

It’s a “lighting festival”. Whatever that means. Looks cool, though. Until 16th February, there will be special illuminations at the Tower, London Bridge, HMS Belfast, Customs House, Hays Galleria, and other places along (and on) the river. http://www.switchedonlondon.com/ I’ll be ch...

Can anyone recommend a good central-ish ‘cheese & wine’ bar/restaurant? I heard about one by the river once but despite my efforts I can’t find any sign of it on the net. Ali

My boyfriend and I have our 1 years anniversary coming up and as the weathers been so nice we were thinking it would be lovely to have lunch somewhere around the Thames, watching all the boats go by and so on. We’re not looking for somewhere really extravagant and equally we’d like something a bit nice...

It looks like we’re in for more rain. Lots more rain. The Thames Flood Barrier is good at preventing surges, but that might not be where the threat comes from. All this heavy rain, combined with industry using less water from the aquifers and the increasing tendency for front gardens to be paved over (meaning ...

Last week I ended up with a friend I’d met in the pub that night, and we were stood admiring the Thames. And then, in our drunken stupor, we pondered on whether you could actually swim across the Thames. And agreed that by our respective 40th birthdays (so a good few years yet), we should give it a try. I d...

Hi I’ve been given the wonderful task of arranging an office day out (approx 60 people) in mid July. We do them every year and have been to Sandown, done treasure hunts round the City and Bankside, been on the Regent’s Canal, cocktail making classes…... I’m struggling to think of someth...

Is there really an oil rig parked up in the Thames just east of Blackfriars Bridge? What is it doing there? There are even men working on it, but they are a little too far away and I am a little too demure to bellow over the bridge at them and find out.
