What's the smell at Blackfriars?

Most days when I go to catch the train at Blackfriars there is the most horrific smell as you approach the platforms. I thought it was the toilets but they are shut at the moment. It could be the tube station below but I don’t think the geography is quite right. Is it just years of pigeon shit or something? An...

What's wrong with Stratford station?

I live in Stratford. Not Stratford-Upon-Avon but Stratford-Upon-Central Line. Not a bad place, not a great place. Always towards the bottom of the list of desirable places to live in London, with the housing prices accordingly low. Now, with the ‘Lympics on the horizon, things are picking up. Not so the sta...

It’s also my birthday and the link between the two is, no doubt, going to be considered to be appropriate by some FCLers. Anyway – if you look here: http://www.wateraid.org/uk/ you will see how you can help on this highly important day. So – the London link is – where are the best and w...

Why would I want my sense of smell back?

I have been a smoker for over 10 years but recently gave up as I was going to have to start stealing from close family and friends to support my addiction. Well, I got my sense of smell back last week and – Jesus H Christ – LONDON MINGS! Piss and rubbish and rotting kebabs! If this is what the pink-lu...

What is the smell of London?

I really can’t get my arse into gear today, so please…humour me. What, for you, is the smell of London? What is the smell that no matter where you were when you smelt it, would remind you of this city? For me, it would have to be that rather unpleasant burnt smell you get on the tube sometime, especia...

What is that stench in Brushfield St?

I walk down Brushfield st every day to and from work, and there’s this one spot which hums to high heaven. It smells like really bad breath, and makes me gag almost every time. It’s just around Starbucks, which admittedly does make me giggle – you’d definitely lose your appetite walking up to...

What's that Subway smell?

Can anyone help me with something that has been bugging me for a while – do Subway sandwich shops actually have ventilation shafts that blow that bread smell out on to the street? You can smell the one on the Aldwych from 30-60 feet away – surely that can’t be the smell emitting from the opening an...

I’m not cheap, but to me it’s more of a challenge to find 20 people to sign up than it is to pay £12 to become a member. It’ll feel a lot more like I’ve earnt. Admittedly, it’s not going too well so far, I’ve only got about a 10% sucess rate. But now instead of saying I have to in...

Sorry for introducing such an unpleasant topic, but has anyone else noticed the persistent smell of sick near the Bakerloo platforms at Waterloo? It never seems to go away! What on earth can be causing it? – I first noticed this phenomenon several years ago and it has not dissipated.

Why does London smell of shit today?

Coming out of my house in north London today there was a faint whiff of shit. Strange, I thought, but maybe they’ve just been manuring the flower beds in Chapman’s Green, my local park. Then, as I got out of the tube at Green Park, same smell – all the way for my walk to work in Victoria. As...

smell on the tube...

I’ve just come back to London after many years. The heat on the tube keeps me on the slow overground, but that smell…. ....kind of like it mostly because it’s so bizarre that in the midst of it everyone isn’t going “phew!” Used to it I guess. Are there any places the tube smell...
