How do London bus route numbers work?

Is there a logic to the route numbers of London buses? If it is ‘N’ it is a night bus, I am guessing that the ‘D7’ means Docklands. But what about the routes with numbers. Is there a system to the numbering? Thanks!!

Can anybody tell me what the numbers painted on the pavement alongside Hyde Park are (they look like years)? They run along the pavement from about half way down Green Park to the Hyde Park Corner roundabout (along Piccadilly). (When it’s a number) I am embarking on a mission to visit restaurants in London that use numbers as their names. Fifteen is arguably the best example of this. As it the small but perfectly formed Fifty Six next to Newington Green. But can you think of / recommend any others?
