How do the Hospitals get their names? Why not rename them all to the area they’re in? And why are hospitals not listed in the A to Z? It makes life very difficult… Chanted_snicker

Unpleasant place names in London?

What are the most unpleasant place names in London? For a neighbourhood, I think Mudchute is top of the list. Who’d want to live in one of those? For a street, I’ve always found Lambs Conduit Street rather unsettling. It seems somehow… intestinal.

On the No 3 and No 159 (amongst others) bus route, going north along Kennington Road, between about Kennington Lane junction and the Imperial War museum there are little silver labels on the trees with people’s names on them. They are at top deck height and presumably placed so that only bus passengers can see...

Following on from an earlier converstation, I noticed a Fried Chicken shop in Lewisham called Daxxy Fried Chicken. I always keep an eye out on the names of such places as they often amuse (Chicken Cottage being a special favourite) and was wondering what other gems people have spotted.

In a message to another FCLer moments ago, I referred to my fellow inhabitant of SW12 as a Balhamoid. Should I have said Balhamite? Balhamer (pronounced “Blarmer” of course). Balhamesque. I’m not sure, I like -oid though. What do you call people who live in the same place as you?

As we all know, punning is the highest form of wit. And it seems that London’s entrepreneurs are the world’s craftiest punners. Witness this morning’s entry: if you need to buy a refrigerator in Stoke Newington, where would you go? Why, Sellfridges of course. And are you feeling a bit peckish? H...

More specifically, what’s in yours? There’s a lot of handles and pseudonyms out there and I was just wondering what they all mean. For my part… ...when I first got into LBL I was reading Phileas Fogg so I rather cleverly took the “Ju” and the “ve” and added a pinch of nau...

When Is A Name Not A Name?

(When it’s a number) I am embarking on a mission to visit restaurants in London that use numbers as their names. Fifteen is arguably the best example of this. As it the small but perfectly formed Fifty Six next to Newington Green. But can you think of / recommend any others?

Silly/Amusing House names

Wandering past and through the salubrious confines of the Heaver Estate (Duchy of Wandsworth) yesterday, I saw a house name, which struck fear into my heart, well, actually, it did momentarily, and then I doubled up with laughter at the sheer pretentiousness of it. Why, I hear you ask? Well, one of the houses on...
