Why do some pigeons have a manky foot?

I seem to see areas of London that have a huge amount of manky footed pigeons. A lot of them only have a stump. What is going on? Are the Pigeons of town starting to chew off their own foot as they taste like a discarded McDonalds, or are they getting them caught in tube doors whilst commuting to the centre? A...
