Dear London, my Hackney based missus has been struggling for years to get an llotment to snatch a bit of the good life locally. She’s been on the local allotment sciety’s list for over 3 years, but still has no idea of where she stands in the pecking order for plots. Apparently local councils have a du...

Hello I think gyms are moderately boring but enjoy racquet sports and have always wanted to learn how to play squash. Does anyone know where I might be able to do this? I live in De Beavoir so on the cusp of both Hackney and Islington. I know there are posts about where to play squash before but nothing really...

Can anyone recommend a decent plumber in east London (Hackney)? i’ve got a broken external pipe which looks just too complicated to do myself (rather annoyingly!). Before I take to the randomness of the yellow pages, does anyone know anyone decent who might fit the bill?

I’m moving in a couple of weeks and haven’t even begun the dreaded packing yet – just looking at all my books sends me into a tizzy. Compounding the problem is a total lack of containers and I’m not sure where I can get some from. I remember when you used to be able to go to your local sup...

Music venue wasteland that is East London

for some reason, East London is a desert wasteland when it comes to decent gig venues. The Hackney Empire does its best but tends to be focused on theatre. Whenever I want to see a band I have to trek over to the wilds of Sarf London or West London, and then getting home is a nightmare (track maintenance = closures ...

The thread Kinkyfantastic posted about the graffiti of what “Davis” did or didn’t do has reminded me of some graffiti I see regularly around Hackney: Mostly it says “Take It Back!” sometimes it says “Take It Back! OK” What does it mean? And who is it by? I like to imagine it is some spurned lover driven to ...

Can I recommend the salad at the Green Papaya?

If you go to the Green Papaya in Hackney, order a Thai salad (large and delicious) not a main course (bland). And try not to sit on the next table to some American dickhead yelling at the top of his voice about how he once had to stare down a 9ft bear. John J

I read this article in the observer today, and it struck a chord, seeing as I, and my friends, are of the age when we’re seriously considering buying property and settling down. Some have been successful, while others are having a pretty hard time. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,,2078270,00.h...

Banksy and the removal of his work has been discussed before on Fridaycities, more than once. But an article in the Independent this week refers to the removal of a couple of ‘pieces’ in particular – a rioter and a rat. Here’s the rat here: It’s not his best work by a long chalk, but tell us: why is Hac...
