I find myself possibly on the receiving end of playing general host and guide to a group of American visitors this summer (ugh, Americans). Students, to boot (ugh, students). One of them is in a motorized wheelchair, and their group leader has been asking me about how accomodating central London will be to the whe...

As if bus/train/tube journeys aren’t already miserable enough, we all know the cold and flu season is upon us now that every carriage/bus/platform sounds like an infirmary. As I sat on the tube this morning and a man plopped down next to me and proceeded to splutter, gasp, gulp and hack non-stop throughout the...

Today, I tried to hop on a bus to work- but as you know, although I have an Oyster card, I can’t find anywhere nearby to top it up, so I end up just not topping it up. I had a £5 note. The fare is £2- not a problem? Apparently it is- because when I went to pay, the driver refused to let me on claiming she h...

Why is it taking so long to resurface Euston station forecourt?

Does anyone know why it seems to be taking about six months to re-surface the bus forecourt part of Euston station? They did one side Oct/Nov/Dec – took Christmas and New Year off – and now the other side is being done Jan and Feb with no real end in site. Its not really that large a space and they don...

I was meeting some friends who were visiting London in Covent Garden on Sat, and due to TFL needing to “improve” the northern line I had to get the bus. This initially seemed a bit of a drag as I was running late and the bus takes longer. However when I went upstairs on the 88 from Mornington Crescen...

How do London bus route numbers work?

Is there a logic to the route numbers of London buses? If it is ‘N’ it is a night bus, I am guessing that the ‘D7’ means Docklands. But what about the routes with numbers. Is there a system to the numbering? Thanks!!

Opening bus windows - is there an etiquette?

Bus windows. Dare you open them? Dare you risk someone’s wrath by doing so? I like to open a window. Particularly when it’s stuffy and the windows are all steamed up but I always hesitate to in case there’s an ugly scene with someone sitting near me saying they’re cold or whatever. I can’t handle public embarrassmen...

How old should you be before getting on the bus, tube or train by yourself? I ask because yesterday, my lovely nephew, who’s eight, was put a bus home by his father as my sis couldn’t pick him up from school, as she’d been carted off to St. Georges a couple of hours earlier. The journey was on the ...

Just wondering if anyone out there has seen anything odd while on public transport. For me, I was on a tube to Farringdon, crowded as usual, then a girl who was standng by the door hanging onto the rail, shreaked, everyone looked, there she was holding on for dear life and a spider was slowly crawling along the r...

Seen it a few times now – an unmarked double decker bus painted white with tinted windows. It doesn’t have a destination up, nor does it say its out of service. Next time I’m going to jot down the number plate. I usually see it between 7:00 and 8:00 on the 112 route towards Brent Cross. Looks v...

What are the three best bus routes to tour London?

You only get three bus journeys, I don’t want to pay for the usual tourist’s open roof double deckers. They don’t have to link, but it would probably be better if they did. Surely route 8 would be in there…

Presuming that they haven’t driven like a spaz, do you say “thank you” to bus drivers as you disembark? I think it’s only polite, me.

A mild and amiable conversation for the weekend. I was filling in some favourite tags for my profile and suddenly realised I have a favourite bus route. I favour the 341. It goes from the end of my road to all sorts of useful places: Angel, Sadlers Wells, High Holborn, Fleet Street, Aldwych and Waterloo and generall...

In London we have the choice of at least five types of public transport: The Tube, The Bus, The River Boat, The Train and The Taxi. Of all the types of public transport which do you prefer and why? For me the cab is too expensive and I don’t live or work on the river which leaves me: 1. The Tube R...

So I wanted to set up auto-top up on my Oyster card, as I’m sick of running out of credit just as I get onto the bus (WHEN are TfL going to sort out Oyster top up points at bus stops, hmm? Still, that’s a whole ‘nother rant). I therefore went to the Oyster Online shop and tried to log in. It tol...

From BBC News : More than 50 years since they appeared on London’s streets, the Routemasters are still running – but not everyone is delighted. The veteran vehicle with its curvy design and its open platform has been called “the last bus to be a proper bus”. Many Londoners remember f...

These video feeds seem to be a rather odd mix of adverts, puzzles, motorcycle stunts, live CCTV footage and other weird stuff. Although some routes show celebrity gossip, if the feeds included useful information like live news tickers, travel information and weather (mixed in with a few ads to pay for it) then I ...

I mean if you use both buses and tubes on a given day, and in comparison with using a 1-day TravelCard? The upper caps seem to apply independently to the buses and then the tubes so I seem to fairly regularly rack up about £8 for a day’s zone 1/2 travel.. I would check the figures on the wonderful Oyster secti...

Does it allow you to travel through zone one or is that some heinous crime punishable by having to spend all your time underground. My dilemma is this: I currently purchase a bus pass which suits my needs although occasionally I venture under the pavement and currently buy credit for this – say £10 per month...
