Who knows of some decent book shops in town, proper book shops, not your common garden Waterstones? Ones full of books that smell as old as they look? Not necessarily looking for originals or valuable books but ones with more character than the mass produced Penguin Classics. Kenningtom

What is your favourite public space?

Either inside or outside. For the first time ever – I am ashamed to say – I visited the British Library, to see the maps of London exhibiton before it closed. The exhibition itself was pretty good but what left more of an impression on me was the building itself. At least, I like the interior – ...

Where are the GOOD bookstores?

As an American in London, one of the things I looked forward to with glee when moving here was the bookstores that must be (in my deluded American brain) absolutely littering the place. I mean, in London, the world capital of literature, surely the book shops must be everywhere, right? Well, so far I have complet...

Hi I have about 50 or so books that I want to pass along… ranging from King Lear to Arthur C Clarke and excellent condition to sun-damaged. After a while I’ll give them away to charity but I wouldn’t mind trying to make a few quid first. My option of choice is to sell the bulk of them to a secon...

What's your local library like?

I need to stop buying books – I stock up and then they sit and fester unread on my bookshelves. Being a member of a library means there’s at least a deadline for reading the things, so I’m going to join up to Lewisham library now I live round here. I used to live down the road from Muswell Hill lib...

I’m about to move flat and would like to unload a good portion of the large piles of books, videos and CDs I’ve accumulated, to make the job a bit easier. Does anyone know of a reputable second-hand dealer who would take the lot off my hands for a few quid? Preferably, collect them from north London too?...

Leaving London blah blah etc Anyway I need somewhere to put alllllllllllllll my stuff and things while I am away. Some kind of storage place that is not a) someone’s bee-infested attic, b) someone’s parent’s garage next to the lawnmower, chest freezer and slug pellets, or c) someone’s hous...

Who will buy my lowbrow trash?

I have a secret and shameful addiction to trashy novels and so have a growing collection of some 250 tomes of crap fiction under my bed that will definitely never be read again. It’d be lovely to make a bit of extra Christmas present money but most book sellers have turned their noses down at my lowbrow fare. ...

I’m a big fan of Christopher Fowler, lots of his books are based in and around Soho. There’s been a mention on his website that the book Roofworld is in development for film. It could be a fantastic film with some great London locations – anyone know anything more about it, or even worked on it...

I’ve got about 800 books, which I’m trying to sell. Chances are, if you want it, I’ve got it, or can get it. I’ll post anywhere in London as cheaply as possible to save you money – cheaper than Amazon, or you can make me an offer for a bunch of them if you like… I’ll also ha...

Hi I’m happy to say my first novel: “HEALING REX” has just been published. It’s a children’s book for kids between the ages of six and six hundred! What can I say? It’s a book about a dog, two very brave fleas…It’s kind of like “Inner Space” meets ̶...

I just won a prize draw, Hooray, woop-woop and all that jazz. Its terribly exciting. I won £5 off at Amazon, unfortunately I purchased a book just the other day from somewhere cheaper and have no need for it anymore, and I probably won’t buy anything at Amazon for quite some time. And so here’s the im...

I’ve always been a staunch proponent of passing on books to others once you’re done with ‘em (not so with people, I swear). I’ve just finished reading Irving’s The World According to Garp and I’m at a loss as to the right person to pass it on to. Anyone want to swap with me? We...

I’m ruddy sick of eBay and Amazon, and people asking inane questions then not even bidding for my lovely books. I have 100 books to give away. Free. I’m moving soon, and simply can’t be arsed to lug them all with me. So, if you can come and collect them – whenever you like really, they are yo...

So, I was having a drink in the Pillars Of Hercules pub, the one behind Foyles, on Sunday afternoon, and two youngsters (a boy and a girl) came in, ordered drinks and sat down. Boy-youngster then removed from his rucksack a load of brand new textbooks, about a dozen of them, which the two ruffians proceeded to bend ...

Please tell about your favourite London-books – not only guide-books and history books, but especially novels that take place in London mainly. What better way to spend your night: In the couch, reading a novel, A-Zed close by, following the route of the books characters…. I can recommend Sarah Water...

Since moving south of the river, I’ve noticed loads of free leave-one-take-one ‘libraries’ in public places – Raynes Park station platform, Raynes Park Tavern, Colliers Wood Tup… I’ve lived all over London and have never come across this many before. Am I just incredibly inobserva...

Interesting experiment over at Time Out, where you’re supposed to write in and help string together a story started by Toby Litt … http://www.timeout.com/london/books/features/2654.html Too bad the opening chapter reads like it was phoned in by the otherwise rate-worthy Litt. Mild exoticism, Heathrow Ai...
