Okay – I’ll admit it – this thread is basically to say what a wanker Boris is. Not for any particularly political reason, nor because he looks a twat, but because I believe he’s a liability, especially in London.

One of BJ’s (Ironic initials, dontcha think?) announcements is that “thugs” on the London Transport system will have their free travel Oyster cards withdrawn. Do you think any of them realised that they actually had this facility in the first place? Will it make a blind bit of difference to their mode of travel? Oh – and they’ll be ‘made’ to clean up graffitti before they get their pass back. Gosh! We’ll be seeing a massive turnaround in crime in the capital now, won’t we? They’ll be quaking in their shoes! (to quote Billy Connolly).

Then we’ve got hand-held scanners and knife arches at every station in Central London. Now, I’ve only been a commuter for – ooh, 27 years – but this is hardly going to reduce anything, is it? Certainly not queues. I actually think that the Oyster card was a good invention and has generally speeded up ingress and exit at stations. I think Mr Livingstone (perhaps in his previous role) simplified London Transport travel charging incredibly, but maybe that should be a separate thread. Anyway, back to the plot. So – we’re all going to have to go through these arches and then get our laptops/blackberries/mobiles/flick-knives out as we travel the Tube. That’s hardly going to lead to delays, is it?

Then he announces that he’s going to save money by cutting the media budget of LT. No, on the surface of this, I probably have no problem. The number of crap ads I’ve seen, trying to convince people to use LT when the majority don’t have a fucking choice in the first place. What’s more, given the goofy photos we’ve seen of him in his first day in office, I would sack his PR people first.

Ohhhh, I could go on….

And I shall. Sorry. If he wants to turn up on Bank Holiday Monday to start his new campaign, fine. But why should all his staff turn up? Especially as, I’m sure, a lot of them are just stuck there because that’s their job.

I’d better stop here because I’m sure this start of a new conversation is too long already but hopefully other people will pick up on his bollocks about the congestion charge or why he thinks Kensington and Chelsea should be exempt (nothing to do with them being safe Tory seats, surely…)

Scanners at tube stations – not going to happen. Feel free to resurrect this post and laugh if it does. Way too expensive. Too many queues. Crime on transport not being a massive problem compared to crime in the rest of the city.
Er, I beg to differ. Some of the most important elderly incarceration legislation was brought in by the Blair government, but just tagged onto other more high profile Acts so no-one in the Daily Mail readership would notice. For example, there was the Human Rights Act, which in Hansard is actually called “The Human Rights and Older Persons Internment Act”. And the Civil Partnership Act, which made gay civil partnerships legal, but was actually called “The Civil Partnership and Elder Abuse Act”. One memorable clause in it outlines in meticulous detail how much force and what specific leather/metal restraints you’re allowed to use on all people over the age of 70 – which is quite a lot, I was pleased to read.

Of course it would increase if there are more youths travelling on buses. I’d be interested to know what the % increase of incidents of youth crime is compared to the % increase of youths travelling. I bet it’s not actually all that different, when you look at it that way.

If the fear of criminal proceedings is not a deterrent to a person, taking their bus pass away isn’t likely to be. Whilst they might not be committing crime on buses, they’ll probably be committing crime elsewhere.

Unless, of course, the specific environmental conditions on buses have some strange impact on the youth of today, that I’m unaware of, turning them into rabid, feral criminals.

I clicked on the Diamond Geezer piece with interest, looking forward to finding some dirty goss on why the tree scheme is rotten and I can go back to wholesale BoJo hating, but sadly it’s failed to convince me:

“Scrapping the Londoner will fund fewer than 5 trees a day. That is, quite frankly, pathetic.”

Five trees a day is still an improvement on no trees a day. The gist of his argument seems to be that we aren’t going to get Epping Forest popping up overnight in the mean streets of central London, which hardly seems earth-shattering.
