Why don't they open their waiting rooms?!

Every year, no matter where I am in London, I get really annoyed by the fact that the train station waiting rooms are never open. Every year it’s the same story – loads of people freezing their bits off on the platform and a big empty room with a padlock on the door. A couple of years ago when I lived in West Norwood I asked the bloke hanging around why the waiting room was closed and he gave me some useless old flannel about not knowing but promising to find out. Then he went back in his own warm little box and had another cup of tea.
Why, people? Why? And more importantly, what can I do about it? I intend to continue complaining to the station staff whenever I can find one, but they tend to be pretty useless. Is there anything more proactive I can do? I’m tempted to go at the padlock with a crowbar. But then I’d have to buy a crowbar. And I don’t see why I should.

It’s generally down to vandalism, I thought. Although I do recall a year or so ago, the Evening Standard running a story stating that East Croydon was the most crime-ridden station, and that has a perpetually open waiting room.
Come and live in Purley, but only if you bring with you an air of urban regeneration. We only want you if you DEMAND to have a starbucks. You get your waiting room, I get my old house price back.

yeah, you may be right flippy. I remember now asking another railway guy at some stage and being told that one waiting room was closed because of repeated vandalism. But surely there’s something that can be done about that. I mean, rather than just give in and close the things… But then again, even a vandalised waiting room is better than no waiting room at all. It’s cooooooold!

Just to paraphrase your question is to answer it – “Why can’t railtrack provide a warm room for kids to smoke weed in of an evening, unchallenged by the station staff who traditionally knock off at dusk anyway?”

premiumI’ve just been sat in the waiting room at Kentish Town overland. It wasn’t too vandalised apart from the youth eating fruit pastilles in the most disgustingly noisy way I have ever had the misfortune to hear. Interestingly there weren’t even any no smoking signs in there which must surely have been an oversight.
When I lived in east finchley it would sometimes be open and sometimes closed due to vandalism. Which was quite nice cos they obviously were making the effort to fix it up every time. (not so nice that some shits were fucking it up again each time though obv)
