The nearest kitchenware shop apparently charges £1.99. £1.99 ! I mean I could go to a shop, buy jars of marmalade, throw away the contents and use them for less than that.

I’d really like to recycle old jars, or buy some kilner jars, without breaking the bank or incurring serious delay.

Ideally in the Camden area…

Accost the recycling men when they come round to pick up the bins and demand that they hand over all their jars?

Or maybe try IKEA. I believe they do cheap kilner-style jars.

How come you’ve got a pressing requirement to store marmalade? What was it in before?

Good point, ISD! What sort of preserve are we talking about? Has your bit of London suddenly been hit by global warming? Has your local Morrisons been hit with an overstock of big oranges? (if it has, let me know and my Mum will be round very quickly – plus, she’s got dozens of jars in her cellar!)

Buy some marmalade or jam, eat all the marmalade or jam, hey presto! empty jars!

So after an evening accosting neighbours and rummaging through recycling boxes like a preserve-fixated tramp, I ended up empty-handed and resorted to relocating things that were already in jars since there wasn’t that great a shortage.

How come you’ve got a pressing requirement to store marmalade? Made some and wanted to get it jarred up (not sure of my terminology there but you jisticate).

What was it in before? A large stock pot.

The blessed Lakeland! Thanks fk. Now I know for next time, although that lids not included thing seems a bit sneaky.

I admire your culinary and creative skills in marmalade making. But to start without thinking “what am I going to put it in” – well I think you’ve learned an important first lesson in jammology.

Head to the Jam Jar Shop next time – or there’s general kitchenware shops like Denton’s on Clapham High St or that one on Shaftesbury Avenue that I always forget the name of…
