Where can I find empty cardboard boxes?

I’m moving in a couple of weeks and haven’t even begun the dreaded packing yet – just looking at all my books sends me into a tizzy. Compounding the problem is a total lack of containers and I’m not sure where I can get some from.

I remember when you used to be able to go to your local supermarket and they had a section at the front by the tills where they left all their used boxes, so you could just pick them up if you needed them. But then again, I was about ten and lived in rural Lincolnshire, so perhaps not my best guide.

Does anyone know a good supplier of large cardboard boxes, preferably in the Clapton/Hackney/Stoke Newington area? Or failing that the Liverpool Street/Moorgate side of the City?

I always find talking nicely to the customer service people in Sainsbury’s or Tesco usually does the job. Another excellent box (sad that I know this) is the fruit ones from the veg men at the markets, so maybe try the Hoxton Market if you are in Hackney.

Probably of limited use, but I am moving house tomorrow and you are welcome to come collect boxes of mine. They are medium sized boxes that i took from work. ha! We’re in W12 though, so you’d probably need transport other than train or bus. The offer is open though: 07917214803. ta, and good luck. R

Ooh, thanks J, that’s a good idea (although does involve the scary ‘speaking to customer service’!)

And zcrookesy – that’s really kind of you, thank you, but unfortunately, I don’t actually have a car. My new housemate does though, so I shall check with her and see.

flippypremium online

Most storage / removal companies will sell you boxes – There’s a big yellow in Bow, if that’s any use…

Access Self Storage were the Gods of my world when I last moved. Their large document boxes are things of wonder, in a toughened cardboard kind of way.

I’ve just moved and have tons of the buggers – you’d be very welcome to them but again, I’m probably not convenient for you to get to without a car – south of the river y’see.

If you’re prepared to pay for them (seems unfair I know, since they used to be so easily got from supermarkets) and don’t want to have to schlepp to your nearest big yellow/access/whatever there are a number of online companies who sell complete moving packs with parcel tape, bubble wrap, the lot. Some even do free next-day delivery.

maybe you should just steal your housemates’ suitcase & various luggage items?

last time i tried boxes from tesco, the customer services woman told me that it was against their health & saftey policy & that all boxes had to be mashed up into pulp (or something) & sent to the moon so that they didn’t infect us with nastiness. but if i was lucky there may be some on the shopfloor if i was lucky.

the health bit is misguided crap. i worked in supermarkets enough in sixth form/university to know that they get mashed up, just so that they take up less space. that’s why we called the machine that did it a compacter.

i found that boxes that had held six bottles of wine were a good size to carry & they don’t get too heavy because you can only fit so much in. i must have looked like a complete alky when i turned up at my current place with about 20 wine boxes full of books & cds & stuff.

You can buy good cardboard boxes from any of the multitude of “storage” places that have sprung up around London like some sort of blue and yellow rash. I’m guessing you don’t fancy paying, though.

have a look in argos. they’ve got a large range of tea chest sized box packages.

handily they also come with a marker pen and a roll of packing tape. Think they range from £25 for 5, to £40 for a “2 bedroom moving” pack.

Or try Freecycle. I’ve had about three offers or unwanted storage boxes just this morning.

Thanks for everyone’s help – it’s all brilliant. I can imagine having to swim through a sea of cardboxes to get to the flat now.

And if anyone has helpful advice about how to make moving easier when on crutches, unfortunately, that will also now be relevant.
