Where are London's best beer gardens?

Now that the weather is turning lovely, pubs with gardens are at a premium. But where are the best ones? I’m specially interested in pub gardens that actually have some proper greenery, as opposed to just concrete.
Thanks.

The first ones that spring to mind are good because they’re quite big, although not massively green (and also one’s north and one’s south) – the Garden Gate in South End Green, and the Duke of Devonshire in Balham.

Queen’s Head in Brook Green has a fairly sizeable one. The Eagle on Askew Road also has a huge one which is wonderful in summer.

The Freemason’s Arms in Hampstead has a really nice garden, although the pub itself is a little too sedate for me. (I’m not rough or anything, I just don’t want to feel like I’m in church when I go for a drink.)

premiumThe Leather Bottle in Earlsfield has a HUGE beer garden and it is grassy and leafy too. I only just discovered it but look forwards to many a night drinking myself stupid there. Hurrah.
You wouldn’t know it from the outside as the pub looks like a giant white box but inside it is fabulous.

The Vanburgh in Greenwich is handy for the park, near to Maze Hill station for the return journey and serves pleasing grub and lovely Leffe. Definitely concrete but worth a shot is the beer garden at Proud Camden. Next to The Roundhouse. Photo gallery inside and themed in the top bar with lifesize stuffed horses on my last visit, the beer vista is seriously spacious and allows fine sunset views of t’ railway adn Camden environs.

I seem to remember this on in Clapham North having lots of greenery, and being absolutely huge.

I used to love sitting in the garden of the Phene Arms under tree in the sun, occasionally staggering for another beer from the bar and wondering who this bloke in the corner was who everyone made such a fuss of…

Not green… and not strictly speaking a garden either, but the Tattershall Castle is a pub boat moored between Westminster and Embankment. It’s a fantastic place to waste an afternoon. Gets busy though…. actually, it gets really busy. In fact, it’s rubbish… you won’t like it. I’d go to Camden or Hampstead or somewhere (anywhere) else if I were you.

premiumThe Tattershall Castle has fab views and is nice outside.
Inside though it is smoky as hell (roll on july), and the club below decks is pretty freakish.
So stay outside, I guess. :)

Yep, outside good, inside bad. Save me a seat though. ;o)

premiumThere’s also a place hidden in The City known to the locals as “The Jampot”, better known as “The Jamaica Wine House”. It’s in St. Michaels Alley, Off Corn Hill, London, EC3V 9DS. It’s a very old pub with the gardens of a church next door. Very busy in the summer, mainly with City types but it’s a bit of an oasis if you work round there and – as I said – it’s well hidden.

Hope & Anchor, Acre Lane. Lots of nooks and crannies, a fab little play area for minature drinkers and a fountain.

Simple find. Walk around barefoot in the garden at the Green Man in Wembley. You can not only hear, but also smell the crowds at the new stadium, however it is just out-of-the-way enough, so they don’t mob the pub.

I second the Duke of Edinburgh in Clapham North and the White Hart in Stokey, although they make you come inside at 9pm there (or at least that’s what they did last summer – although that might’ve been more to do with the fact that it was my boyfriend’s birthday and he was running around with a pair of London Underground boxer shorts on and no trousers…and yes, I’m still with him…)
There’s also the pub next to the Aquarium on Old Street which has a roof garden – that’s quite unusual although not very green I don’t think. But you can peer over the top and look at all the ‘art’ on top of the bus shelters.
(for ‘art’ read ‘dead pigeon’) (probably)

Our local, Herne Tavern on the E Dulwich border, SW corner of Peckham Rye Park (it might seem a long way out but actually it’s a swift train ride out from London Bridge to Peckham Rye if you’re coming down for lunch), has been done up lately and they have a superb, huge, landscaped back garden and fantastic food and beer. I think it might be best to book if you want to come for weekend lunch.
