What happened to the Beach Burrito Café?

Came past the other day and it had closed down. They seemed to be doing well and spoke about opening other locations aside from the Berwick Street original. Anyone know what happened. I was just in the mood for a burrito.

Oh noes! I hadn’t even gotten a chance to go there yet, and it’s closed already? Curse you, cruel fate!

And the marble arch C & As has gone too.

There was still a C&A?!?

I’d like to know as well, I was a big fan of their burritos as was half my office… wonder if the rent was whacked up or something…

So. Where else can one score a burrito in this town? I am told Leather Lane is good…

Daddy Donkey on Leather Lane is good, but it’s only a little cart, with nowhere to sit; worth it for the carnitas burrito though! Personally I thought the food at Green & Red in Bethnal Green was ok, but pricey and the service was absolutely dire, wouldn’t go back there. Places to try are Mestizo (Hampstead Road, near Warren St) and El Panzon in Brixton. Personally, I like La Perla on Charlotte St, but they can be a bit hit and miss, and Taqueria in Notting Hill, but it’s a bit expensive. Not tried Crazy Homies yet, bit put off by the appallingly naff name. Why is London so lacking in good Mexican food?

D’oh – I went down there the other day all looking forward to it – but they were closed so I kidded myself that they were closed on Mondays like my library, or something. But apparently not. It was really good, damn it!

I was just googling this today, in fact, and then saw your post. Oooh, spooky or something.
According to a thread on Londonist, the owner had to move either for developer or rent-hightening reasons. He supposedly mentioned this last year to someone so it might not have been a complete surprise to them. No word on where they might be instead.
The BEST burritos I have found in London, though, are in Exmouth Market at Freebird Burritos. The say they do deliveries for 4 people or more, though they don’t state how far they will travel. They’re truly wonderful, tasty, succulent and spicey things, and fill you up until dinner time. The carnitas in particular is excellent, and the rice is nicely flavored with coriander and lime. Mmmm, burritos…

Shame, I really enjoyed Beach Burrito Cafe. If I were to hazard a guess, I bet it came down to health and safety issues. I don’t think they had a public restroom (is that a legal requirement?)

Now, that is outrageous! Tex Mex was born in the US as fast food and reinvented in London, precisely in this burritos temple in Berwick Street RIP, burritos with guacamole.

Freebird Burritos? Are you yanking my chain??? As much as I usually love my chain yanked, I would not be a happy bunny if I schleped my way down to Exmouth market to find there was no burrito, they weren’t free and they certainly weren’t served by birds. C’mon, come clean. I’ve googled this and this is the only hit I can find. Hmmm.
Someone put you up to this didn’t they? Heh? Heh?

I can also confirm the existence of Freebird Burritos…and they are the closest thing to a “real” burrito that I’ve had since moving to London. I’m used to the Californian burritos, and these ones are really damn good. I recommend the carnitas.
They run a stall at Exmouth Market on Mon-Thursdays only. There is usually a long line, so get there early for lunch!
If you’d like to call them: 07930 609047. They will deliver with a minimum of four meals.
I think they aren’t yet showing up on google, because it seems they are still quite new.
PS. I don’t work for Freebird…but I love their food, and they are really a nice bunch.

They moved because they’re developing that section of Berwick Street.
Oh the irony of knocking down a knocking shop!

That was my favourite hangover food when I worked in Soho…. However I’m now just north of Oxford Circus and delighted to say that there’s a fantastic burrito stall on Goodge St (along with a Thai, Chinese and salad stall), near to Charlotte St. There’s also a new place on Charlotte Place called El Burrito but I’ve not been there yet.

Mexicali in Kensington on Fulham Road opposite the cinema is Beach Burrito Cafe by another name.
It is, unsurprisingly, awesome.
There’s a new place near Angel called Tortilla – it looks not very good
