Wanted urgently: man with van

I need to move the rest of my stuff from one place in East Dulwich to another some time this afternoon. Does anyone know of anyone – doesn’t have to be a man – with some form of reasonably capacious transportation at their disposal? (doesn’t have to be a van)

I heard that there’s someone who hangs around near Goose Green with a van but I haven’t got time to find out whether this is as dodgy as it sounds.

Anyone know anyone I can ring? It’ll only take an hour to shift everything, maybe two. Please help – or I’ll have to throw my bookcases in a skip.

Planning isn’t really your long suit, is it?

I’d love to help but I’m not able to drive for the next year (no – nothing to do with alcohol…)

But I think I have to agree with Spammed too…

There’s a van hire place on Barry road. (Dulwich van hire) – it is only self drive though. 8299 2745.

I’m not a great planner, no, but that’s because plans backfire. I had transport arranged for last Friday, when I was originally supposed to move, but then the move fell through. Actually the transport fell through too, so it was just as well in the end. Oh, I don’t know. Sometimes waiting till the last minute to do everything pays off.

Oh, bother. I wish I’d learned to drive.

If you end up really desperate, I can drive and have been doing so long enough to hire vans. Driven a fair few of the buggers too.

Thanks, Chris, but that won’t be necessary after all. I just got given a number, which I called and have arranged for someone to turn up at 7 this evening. With a van. £30 an hour. Which seems ever so slightly extortionate but it shouldn’t take longer than an hour, so to heck with it.

If anyone else needs a van in a hurry, talk to Alison on 07904 968 153.

I’ll let you know if they do a good job.

Planning schmanning.

And did they do a good job? Am in search of a man with van myself!

I’ll let you know, I say. They’re coming this evening. Tonight. In the future.

£30 an hour? Get them to teach you how to drive while they’re at it.

Well, that’s what I thought initially. But really, you know, in retrospect I don’t think it’s that bad.

And the service was very good. Robin came round at ten to seven, was ruthlessly efficient and utterly charming all at the same time.

I told him I’d recommend his company. He gave me a card. On the card that company name is ‘Man & Van’, which kind of says it all. However, Robin informed me that the company name has since changed to ‘Big Dre’. Hmm. Anyway, they were very good. And, after I’d moved in, I was walking home on the first night when what should I see but the van a friend of mine had mentioned. Here…

It’s not a great picture, but what it actually says on the side is ‘£15 per hour’ (sounds good), ‘2 hr minimum’ (aaah) and ‘£10 booking fee’ (cheeky buggers, balls to them).

Anyway, yes. Man & Van. Good.

Anyone willing to help me out with a move tomorrow or Monday? Just got a deal on couch & ottoman near Eleph&Castle and I need to get it over to Barbican. Payment will come in the form of alcohol, free taste festival ticket for Sat night (goddamit someone take these this thing!), or £20.

Tried Jonny but he was busy today. I actually used this place: http://www.alternativetransportservices.co.uk/index.php (be warned, the website and automated phone message are obnoxious).

Seems like they focus on the university crowd, but it was great because they’re open 24/7. It cost me £35 but I had to do the loading and unloading. The driver, a bloke by the name of David, was a wonderful fellow. He wouldn’t even accept the tip I offered. All-in-all, great deal for the price and the quick booking.
