Venue for a Wedding

This is a post of the “well why not” variety, rather than the “I am extremely lazy and will perform no other investigation on my own part” approach, so feel free to omit really really expensive places, or really really obvious places (of which there aren’t that many).
So, somewhere 98 people can eat, drink and be merry, whilst 2 more look on like bemused parents in an abba-toir.
Nice to haves:
- In or around London.
- Not hideous.
- Not 10k just to get the venue, chairs are extra.
- I will add other criteria after I’ve hit the “Create Conversation” button because that can’t be everything can it ?

I’ve always liked the idea of the Pump House in Battersea Park

I think it works out at £400 per hour but you have to organise everything else on top; but at least then you’re not restricted to the venue’s approved caterers etc.
I know a good wedding planner too, if you like!

Thanks Tallulahlula – I shall check it out. In the meantime, have a kudo.

MarkE, not quite on target but near to the mark…
Want a photographer for your wedding? That’s my line and being KCL to KCL. Only charge will be material and being digital, not a lot.
Let me know

Lots of my friends have had wedding receptions in pubs. The Star on Chester Road (which has an upstairs room big enough for dancing, with a balcony big enough for a few smokers); The Drapers Arms on Barnsbury Street; the Alma in Newington Green, to name but three. Other London weddings I have been to or heard about have been in the Athenaeum (which I suspect fails on the chairs are extra criterion), Fredericks in Islington, er, and I’ve forgotten.
You can get married and have your reception in the House of St Barnabus homeless charity place in Soho, which looks quite nice http://www.hosb.org.uk/VenueHire.htm. The Amadeus Centre in Little Venice, which has a big organ in it (hoho), um, the Crypt of the Bleeding Heart in Farringdon (no garden though).
I’m going to a wedding in a couple of weeks where the reception’s in Old Finsbury Town Hall on Rosebery Ave – looks ace, but can report back after the visit. You can hire the church on Commercial Street for parties, can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s opposite Spitalfields market. Or Wilton’s Music Hall, it costs a fortune but you could make your mates do a cabaret after the wedding breakfast…

For the sake of future generations:
Haven’t looked into pubs yet, but The Star looked very nice the last time I was in there.
The Athenaeum was too small for us (80+) and recommended the Grove.
Fredericks in Islington have, apart from anything else, a very helpful page on weddings in Islington. Haven’t pursued any further.
House of St Barnabus are currently a temporary Members Club – still trying to get info from them directly. Going via the Members Club is expensive to very expensive.
The Amadeus Centre in Little Venice is so far a bit of a win for us, since it’s not ridiculously costly and for a smallish fee you can provide your own caterer.
The Crypt of the Bleeding Heart in Farringdon I’m still waiting to hear (send them your postal address if you want info, since they like to physically post stuff to you).
The Old Finsbury Town Hall is run by some bunch called BoulevardEvents who manage lots of wedding venues, and are a bit “charge for everything including the kitchen sink”, at least for that particular venue. I would have prefered to talk to someone at the academy based there directly since we only really want the space, and not for example the sink.
Sorry for lack of links, I’ll update this if I stumble across them again.
Thanks PrincessBride. Have 11 kudos (despite page only permitting 1).

I went to a friends wedding at The Trafalgar Tavern in Greenwich, right on the river and a lovely space too.

premiumI once attended a wedding in a foundry.
Metal!
Sorry, BNM.
Anyway, I got very excited when I discovered you can hire the space INSIDE the Wellington Arch near Hyde Park. I think it’s expensive, though.

I can help you narrow down your search.
NOT Shoreditch Town Hall.

I got married here, at Charlton House: http://www.greenwich-guide.org.uk/charhse.htm
It was very nice actually.

I got married at The London Rowing Club (just to bleat on about me a bit). Right on the river with a big balcony looking out, and you can marry and eat in the same place, and can take 100 guests. You have to get their catering (which was very good, at least it was 4 years ago…) but can bring your own booze. Very very reasonable for London – we did our whole do for around £5k although we deliberately made it a bit DIY including getting my dress on ebay to help bring it in on that bottom line…

Urgh, you people are making me extremely busy.
Following on from dawnage’s Charlton House suggestion (email dispatched), here is a page listing lots and lots of Greenwichy venues which someone in the future might want to look at. Not me, because I seem to have nigh-on 50 billionty venues to deal with.

So far the ForeignPress have not replied to my single solitary email. Perhaps it’s because I’m not foreign enough. I am solidly following SFULG’s advice and not going to Shoreditch Town Hall. Haven’t tried the Rowing Club yet pending other results. Am considering the Westminster Boating Base in Pimlico for people who like weddings in boating related organisation headquarters type of things.
Keep ‘em coming I guess, even if my sanity is straining at the seams as a result.

How about the House of Commons. It would… < insert political pun here >. Saying that, I have been there a couple of times and it reminded me of a place that should have a smell of urine. If that makes sense.
