Suggestions for new auto-tag tricks

One of the nice side-effects of the new tag stuff is that it’s now much easier for us to make prefixed:tags do clever things. So if you click on something/someone tagged book:harry potter and the goblet of fire, then there’s an option to find it on Amazon, or if you click on someone who has tagged web:www.fridaycities.com then, it lets you go straight to the site. Etc.

So far we the site recognises all the popular stuff like email:, myspace:, msn:, skype:, flickr: etc, but that’s just the start. What other prefixes should be be doing clever things with, and what should those clever things be? Your starter for ten: I’m just about to make the drop down for things tagged film:xxxx give the option to search for the xxxx on IMDB and also on Amazon.

What else? Kudos for good suggestions.

Ben: Kudos for the Place search (which I’ve just set up).

Flippy: Coming soon, for members who have been on the site for at least 3 months.

I’d like to be able to add a tag or two to a response, although that might allow subversion of the moderation.

Hi Paul. You might want to point the place autotag to maps.google.co.uk rather than maps.google.com – at the moment it will only find USA places!!

also it’d be good if we could define in our profiles our own sources for tags to override the FCL defaults: play.com instead of amazon, streetmap or multimap instead of google maps etc

Ok, Wiki is working and maps is now UK.

While you’re on this, I’ve been meaning to point out for a while that the web: tags in profiles could be a bit more intelligent that it is.

A lot of myspace/flickr/etc profiles are broken because people have added the http:// in their links, or missed off the www or stuff. Can you parse the url on saving and make sure it resolves to something other than the fridaycities 404.

yep. that’s something we’re working on. So many features to sort, so few hours in the week! Predictive tagging coming soon too.

Also…

Films
How about a search on cinema listings for current films eg.
[film: hot fuzz] = http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=hot+fuzz+london

Transport
Could you do something with train/tube stations eg.
[station: Black Friars] = http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ldb/index.html?a=findDepartureBoard&station_query=blackfriars&boardType=departures

There’s a similar thing for tubes stations on tfl. Not sure how much use this feature would be though.

Food & Drink
How about a recipe search on http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/ or something.

Bands/Theatre/Exhibitions
Ticket search.

General
Surely pretty much anything could lead to an eBay search?!

And, as an aside, I presume with things like this, you’re setting up as an affiliate. Amazon, Ticketmaster, and loads of these things will give you a tiny slice of anything sold via your link. It doesn’t add up to much but it all helps and at no cost to you or us.

EDIT: Not sure why but your system has stuck semicolons after each ampersand in the links up there. I’ve tried editing them out but can’t. Also… any chance of making that edit box a bit bigger. It’s like keyhole surgey!

Regan

Is there already an option that links everyone tagged with “books” to the various threads about local book groups etc?

There probably is…

Thanks for those. Film: now searches IMDB and Google cinema listings, band: searches ticketmaster, amazon, last.fm and play. And I’ve added a couple of dozen other things too.

Following on from that DSI:username ?

EDIT: when you click on say, myspazzz:completewanker, should that then be a link to that page? Thought it was but just tried it on mine and it doesn’t work that way…

roo: click on the triangle, it will drop down and give you the option to go to the page

rogan

when it’s a tag that links to another community (flickr, myspace…) it’d be nice just to be able to list all the people who use that community. Just out of curiosity mind, not terribly useful

Surely, rather than just “place” for geographical locations, you should be able to tag yourself as work:ec1r0jh (you all now know where I work… should I be scared?), and then bar:sw1y5ah, museum:ec2y5hn blah, blah, blah. Then by some very clever trickery that I don’t understand, but is possible because I’ve seen it on another site; you can put that data onto Google maps and it automatically shows you FCL recommended bars, museums etc and also shows which other FCLers live/work near you. (better still it could also be available in Google Earth. That would impress me an awful lot).

Yeah. I’ve been meaning to look into setting up something on Google Maps but I’m a bit out of the loop programming wise.

In theory there should be a way of setting up a database of all LFC (London Friday Cities, not Liverpool FC although that would be equally valid, but perhaps not on this website) locations. With a bit of metadata there could be a Friday Cities google map which only lists recommended bars/restaurants/clubs/etc with a link back that goes to a FC search for that location etc.

Do it!
