I’m starting a new job in a month or so in the London Bridge area (Tate Modern side) and would like to go armed with potential places to get lunch, go for a drink, etc (would prefer not to have to go miles)

I know I’ll be able to take recommendations from new work colleagues, but I won’t know them when I start. FCLers on the other hand…

Any suggestions gratefully received…

Tas, near the globe, is a nice Turkish place for lunch (http://www.tasrestaurant.com/) there’s a branch near the globe and two on Borough High Street. The Rake (http://www.timeout.com/london/bars/reviews/9196.html) is a lovely pub, but please don’t tell everyone because then it’ll get too busy! El Vergel is a wonderful place to have lunch, try the steak sandwiches! (http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/reviews/3823.html) Oh, and there’s a branch of Fuzzy’s Grub on Tooley St now (http://www.fuzzysgrub.com/) so the job’s a good’un!

oooh, so many… if you venture other side of borough market, which I know is the wrong side – Wrights Seafood, Wine Wharf (brown leather sofas..mmm and great wine list), Brew Wharf. New place called Magdalens on Tooley St is meant to be good…food at Tas is great… enjoy!

Ahhh man – had one of the best nights of my life at Wrights. Up at the counter demolishing the tastiest crab and sharing it in wonderful company. The chef kept passing over all sorts of little treats and weird liqueurs and we stayed with the staff after they shut and shared some more wine. It’s given me a right old grin just to have been reminded of it.

Ta!

What about that cool underground bar with the hidden entrance in London Bridge station? Shunt…

I’ve been to Magdalen. It was nice. Not as great as some of the reviews suggest. And the staff were so laid back our waiter very nearly came and sat at our table. That wasn’t a good thing. Champor Champor in Weston St would be my recommendation. Lovely Malaysian food. I had Crocodile when I was last there.

Would also agree with the Rake, but shhhh. The Market Porter and Southwark Tavern are quite nice too, but everywhere gets a bit rammed of a Thurs/Fri evening…

Muchas gracias for all your suggestions… now I’m excited about starting work in the area, because I thought it was a bit of a wasteland! Cheers

Fantastic souvlaki, salads and wonderful octopus if that floats your boat.
