Sofa shop suggestions s'il vous plait?

So, I’ve finally got – after three months – my flat almost how I want it. My pictures are hung, my fridge is stocked, broadband is (almost) connected. I’m very pleased with myself, given how little time I spend there.
The only thing I’m lacking is a sofa. I just want something simple, and functional, but I suppose relatively smart looking (no patterns). And I want it delivered. And I don’t want to spend much on it because – er – I’m never there.
So – can anyone suggest either a good online place that delivers or a good offline place in or around East Dulwich?
Good suggestions will be rewarded with – I dunno – an invitation to sit on my sofa and watch The Bill. While I’m not there.

premium onlineI wouldn’t buy online, unless you can test it out first. It’d be like buying shoes without trying them on. You may not be in much of the time but when you are you don’t want an uncomfortable sofa.
Places like ‘Sofa so good’ (puns seem to be mandatory unless you’re DFS) aren’t terribly expensive.

That’s a good point, but I’m really not hugely fussed about trying it out. I lived in my last flat for 18 months and probably sat on the sofa 20 times. It’s just that there are times when having one is useful.

premiumGo for a drive down purley way. Do what everyone else does and just get out of your car when you hit traffic.
There’s even an Ikea there, which would probably meet your requirements.

‘your car’
You see, there’s the rub.

premiumAh I see. butter up a car-owning friend. Or start a thread “Can anyone drive me to Ikea?”. I’m free tonight and will do the business in exchange for some meatballs if you want ;)

premiumPaul, I can give you a lift – i am also hunting sofas at the moment : )

Gosh, really? That’s incredibly generous of you. The only slight catch of course is that you can’t fit two sofas in a car. (Unless you’re Long Distance Clara?). If two people are sofa hunting though, I wonder if it might be worth hiring some king of van for the evening?

My tightarse landlord gave us a whopping £200 budget to replace a knackered sofa. The only place that offered anything remotely acceptable for that shitty price was Argos. They deliver free of charge, and have a fair choice of plain, simple designs. I wish I’d gone straight to them, instead of allowing myself to waste two days of my life in pIKEA.

premiumPaul, my dad has a van (not a transit, slightly smaller but should fit two sofa’s in).

Purley Way is the best place to get it. There is a sofa workwhop down there and a DFS. I found the sofa of dreams, a big squshy cream long and deep (!) in the former but it cos about 3 grand. I went nextdoor to DFS and something exactly the same for 1000 English pounds in the summer sale. It is mahoosive and it came in two parts. They can get things into akward spaces without charging the earth. Sofa Workshop make you pay for an assessment. Which is a bit shit when you’ve spent a fortune on a sofa.
Choose it by sitting on it. Mine is fabulous. Provdes and Richo can vouch for its comforting ability to swallow you up. Mmmm, schnuggle. Good luck!

There were lots of typos in that last one. I can’t be arsed to edit. Do not judge me.

onlineHunting sofas – sounds like a Goodies sketch. Anyway, take a look at Tesco and Argos for cheap sofas that do the job, particularly if you have sold your soul for Clubcard or Nectar points. They’ll deliver and pick up if you don’t like it, no questions asked. The only downside of that is that you don’t get to team up with Twiglet in her Dad’s van.

Chez, DFS does sound cheap, but that was in the Summer sale, how long might Paul have to wait for the next DFS sale…....
