Silly/Amusing House names

Wandering past and through the salubrious confines of the Heaver Estate (Duchy of Wandsworth) yesterday, I saw a house name, which struck fear into my heart, well, actually, it did momentarily, and then I doubled up with laughter at the sheer pretentiousness of it.

Why, I hear you ask? Well, one of the houses on the road (Streathbourne Rd to be exact) was called the following..

‘Whi Worri’

Now, is there a small, hidden away cairn in Wales somewhere which is called thus, or is it indeed, as I strongly suspect, an ‘amusing’ pun…...?

Following on from this, there is the greatly, and I hope, aptly, named ‘Granny’s House’ in Earlsfield.

Anyone else spotted any amusing house names in London on their travels….?

A friend of mine’s parents, who live in Dublin, went for a nice variant of the old favourite (Dunroamin’) with their house-name: “Dunkerran”. Took me a while to spot that it wasn’t just a nice Irish place-name…

Where i used to live there was a house near the sewage plant called “the house at poo corner”, which raised a smile.

It’s not in the slightest bit amusing but it does irritate me beyond measure (which other people might find amusing) and that’s the house on Southgate Road in Islington which is named ‘Seaview Cottage’. Why? WHY? It doesn’t overlook the sea, it never has, and never ever will (it might overlook the Regent’s Canal, at a pinch, should the banks burst, but even then the flow will doubtless be stemmed by banks of semi-conscious yuppies living in £1 million one-bed flats). The view it has is of a row of slightly tatty mid-19th century terraced houses.

I digress. But I would like to thank you for allowing me to vent spleen about this most ridiculous house-name.

Ooh I did just remember though that my lovely cousin Russell has taken to calling his elderly parents’ bungalow in Shirley, Croydon, ‘Wrinklies End’. That’s quite amusing. Unfortunately there’s no sign up saying that but I could nip round with a magic marker…

I feel a bit calmer now…

MLF – I’ve been trying to “get” the Dunkerran” joke, saying it out loud in different ways, and all I can come up with is that the house is/was occupied by a Chinese ex-IRA soldier or something.

But I’m probably just being thick again

Thanks, Babb. I thought mine was a tad contrived…

I’ve seen several “Roundtoits” but that’s about it.

We live at no. 1D which I wanted to rename ‘Oldpenny’ but I was told not to be so silly.
