Should we have to pay?

It took me two hours to get home last night. My journey should take all of about twenty minutes. I’m sure I read / heard somewhere that if your train is more than n minutes late you’re enitltled to a refund but I don’t think this applies if trains are just cancelled.

Personally I reckon being charged an exorbitant fare for service that poor is a bit rough, especially as half the time we’re given no explanation as to why trains are delayed or cancelled.

Does anyone know what the rules are around this? Are we as passengers entitled to refunds when the trains are up the swanny, or do we just have to put up with it and let the operators get away with piss-poor service?

Yes, you are entitled to a refund:

If you hold a ticket for a Single or Return journey and your journey on Southeastern is delayed by 30 minutes or more, we’ll offer you rail travel vouchers or a cheque refund (for awards over £30) to the value of 50% of the fare for the outward or return portion of your journey affected by the delay.

and/or

If the train you planned to catch is delayed or cancelled and you decide not to travel, return your unused ticket to the ticket office for an immediate full refund. No administration fee will be charged.

I found these on this page http://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/main.php?page_id=87 in the ‘Times of Disruption’ section.

Hmmm, but what happens if your train is cancelled and you still have to travel by train, just on a later one that arrives at its usual time?
