There was a piece on the local news last night about how some companies and individuals reckoned that London deserved a domain suffix of its own, i.e. (no, not ie) .ldn

Do you think that’s a good idea or would EVERYONE want one? berlin would .bln, Moscow .mcw and Paris .pis

Having the pleasure of managing a network of websites, and the needs of all their lovely owners, it would become a nonsense. People think they need websites for their country, city, town, villlage, back garden, lounge, bed…..this sounds very much the same. Once one wants it, they all will. In fact, being the gate keeper of a global tool is not dissimilar to dealing with passengers back from my hostess trolley days. For example:

Passenger: I want a newspaper

Chez: I’m terribly sorry, sir. We don’t have any left.

Passenger: Get me one though.

Chez: OK sir. Yells up the aisle to the pilot Ere, Captain Bird’s Eye! Can you pull over by the northern lights? Someone wants a paper. I’ll be five minutes. Just leave the engine running.

Rest of the passengers: I want one now.

Chez: For God’s sake. You say one can have something and then they all want one. Sod this. I’m going to learn to write and be a website manager.

Cuts to present date

Chez: For God’s sake. You say one person can have a site and then they all want one. Sod this. I’m going to learn to…

It sounds like a truly awful idea. More expense & admin for companies having to register another domain, even if just to stop spoof sites being set up, and another permutation for users to type into an address bar when looking for something. In fact I can’t think of a single benefit – can you remember any arguments in favour from the news item?

Agree with Spammed with huge nobs on. Really. There is enough politics involved as it is. Am shuddering at the thought of what it would bring up.

Still. I enjoyed writing my short play. Should I perform it somewhere, possibly at a fringe theatre, do you think? Didn’t think I should, no.

It would certainly allow the net to reuse domain names, although IPV6 would need to be deployed to cope.

Yep I’m one of those sad bastards who talk in TLAs….

I think the play should be called ‘Spread Thy Domains (no you can’t have a fucking newspaper)’ or STD for Cobo….

No. Don’t be so silly.

I didn’t think it was a play, Chez, it read to me like reality TV. Get KitchensDirect to produce it, though, and you’ve got yourself a Bafta, darling.

There was something similar for .la a while ago. If I remember right, the Laos government decided to sell the rights to the .la TLD to DreamHost, who then marketed it to Los Angeles businesses. Business was less than brisk, though, so DreamHost sold the rights on again last year.

So if there wasn’t enough demand for a Los Angeles TLD, I can’t imagine London faring any better.

I think London would be better off with it’s own Godzilla. Er…Codzilla? Rodzilla? Modzilla? Provdes, plenty of photoshop ops for you there. I particularly like the idea of Rodzilla. I bet it wears tartan and has a wholly inappropriate girlfriend.

Well, that’s all very well, Juvey, but once London has its own Godzilla it’ll be wanting its own Godzuki, and that would just be intolerable…

Wait until Moth-Ra gets involved. Or was it She-Ra? Or Ra-Ra? Oh I can’t remember now – they were all big in the 80s I think. Like Right Wing Libertarianism, and British Hindus. How times change.

Cobo04 – IPV6 is not a TLA. It’s a TLAANA (Three Letters And A Number Acronym).

Also – aren’t you going to sue Provdes for slander for suggesting you have an STD?

And is Godzuki one of those stupid number puzzles, but with a religious bent?

Oh – hang on – talking about religious bents isn’t too PC today, is it?

London already has its own Godzilla. I am just not telling anyone where it is. Until the time I choose to realease him…

No, it’s a holy motorbike. Jesus, as we all know, came down from heaven on a Yamaha – but his dad rides a Godzuki.

Sounds like an administrative disaster waiting to happen. It seemed to be one company in particular, who felt that London generated enough income to be considered a separate entity to the rest of the country. For some reason, this would only manifest itself as a separate domain name, not in border guards with alsatians on the M25, or needing a passport to go to Bluewater.

What the piece turned into tho, and god I hope it was unintentional, was an tedious ad for the company’s ropey clothing.

Speaking of badly-placed ads, did anyone catch the profile of Gordon Brown on Channel 4 news last night? It was basically an ad for him as prime minister. I don’t have a problem with the man personally, but that was taking it a bit far.

Don’t even get me started on Gordon Brown…

In the 80s cartoon, Godzuki was Godzilla’s Scrappy-Doo. Really annoying.
