Should drinking be banned in public places?

Are the Cheif Constable of Cheshire’s proposals purely reactionary or do you think banning drinking in anywhere not licenced by the local authority is a good idea? he has also suggested raising the drinking age to 21.
Personally I think increasing the drinking age would only lead to more underage drinking by making it more of an allure to those under the age of 21. Take the US for example. Many states have a legal drinking age of 21 and according the the US Surgeon general the US has approximately 11 million underage drinkers (http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2007pres/20070306.html)
Educating children at a young age about alcohol and making it less of a mystery would, I think, lead to a reduction in underage drinking. Take France for instance, where drinking alcohol with a meal is an every day occurance for many families. There social drinking is done in moderation and rarely unaccompanied by food.
Changing the laws won’t make much of a difference, changing attitudes will. Discuss.

No. Don’t ban drinking in public places. That’s a shit idea.
They should drop the drinking age to 16, and encourage safe drinking rather than making it illegal.

premiumYes, ban drinking in public places. Also, laughing, jumping and Croc wearing.

Double edged sword – on the one hand, raising the drinking age would reduce the number of pikey fucking chav cunts in the pub, which is good, but (on a serious note for a second) raising the drinking age would simply increase the number of underage drinkers hanging around outside off licenses and drinking in the street / park / local crack house / wherever, which isn’t the answer.
I’m assuming these measures are a response to anti-social behaviour. The problem isn’t with people aged 18 – 21 being able to drink, uit’s the whole drinking culture in this country. Let’s go down the pub and race to get as cunted as possible before closing, and all spill out on to the street trying to get taxis and kebabs when we’re all Stella’d up – there won’t be any fights of course!

Let’s not ban anything. Let’s just learn how to be sensible and considerate of others, and instil same into our offspring. It’s not so difficult.
My pre-school children may be slightly drunk much of the time but they always offer to buy a round.
Social services reading this, please note, the last bit’s not true.
(They’ve never offered to buy a round.)

ban…..Croc wearing
I genuinely agree with this.
I heard on the radio this morning the idea of upping the legal age for alcohol has been dismissed.
I don’t think alcohol in public places should be banned.
END OF ONIONS.

No it shouldn’t. Let’s ban people who always want to ban things instead. Maybe look at the cause of obnoxious and anti-social behaviour rather than having some knee-jerk..’ooh let’s ban stuff ’ reaction.

Boutrosx3 – Unfortunately, the majority of the population seemingly can’t “learn how to be sensible and considerate of others, and instil same into our offspring”
Personally I’d have no problem with alcohol being banned in public places, though agree that raising the drinking age wouldn’t do any good.

As an aside, Pantomimes don’t really work in Essex – when people shout “he’s behind you” Essex girls have a habit of bending over…..

I thought it already was in certain areas. I know in Chester city centre you get arrested if seen drinking on the street and believe that Camden have just brought the same law in.
It seems to me that they can ban it already and they should do so in trouble spots but not across the board. In one stroke it would mean the end of the picnic for us all!

Bexleyheath town centre has a designated no alcohol zone where you aren’t allowed to drink in the street. Obviously all the little chavs just go to the park instead…..

Bolton council banned drinking on the streets about 15 years ago and were the first LA to do so, I think.
In a time before ASBOs, it was mooted as a method of getting drunken homeless people off the streets. It was only applied to the town centre, where there weren’t any school kids hanging around, but we always used to go and drink at the local cricket club anyway so that we weren’t found out by parents…
