Share your tagging ideas, please

Hello all,
So we’re sitting here in Fridaycities Towers, thinking about tags. We’ve been fascinated and amused by the tags members are using to tag themselves and also the myriad possibilities for making them work even better.
For example, I had a thought yesterday that I might put, in my status box, some want:s and have:s, for swapping purposes. For example I have a guitar (swaphave:guitar) and I want a bike (swapwant:bike). People visiting my profile could see what I have to swap and a list of things I might accept in return. And I can do the same with them.
But that’s not all. If I asked our tech team nicely, perhaps they could make swaphave work as a tag in its own right as well as when paired with something. So I could choose to see a list of everything that anyone has tagged using swaphave: and thus a list see everything that everyone wanted to swap. Maybe they could do matching too, so on tagging swapwant:bike, I can automatically see a list of people who have used swapwant:bike. You see?
But that’s just one idea. There must be zillions of possible uses for tags – either using the current functionality, or by adding cool tweaks. Anyone have any good ideas? Kudos for the best.

Not sure if this works already (don’t think it does) but is there a way of genericising (that’s never a word) the tags. i.e. if I search for “speed date” I’ll also get things tagged “speed dating”, “speeddate” and other variations etc.

Some way of automatically matching or combining related tags. At the moment we have 53 stories tagged “restaurants” and another 18 tagged “restaurant”; these tags could be combined/matched somehow as it’s essentially the same tag. Same for slightly less obvious ones, like “tube” and “underground”, or overlapping areas, say “hoxton” and “shoreditch”.

premiumIf one of you doesn’t leave the site it may very well implode. You can decide who…
Freaks.

I’m feeling the pressure to produce again now.

Yes – that’s something we’re working on. To sort the restaurant/restaurants thing we’re going to have predictive tagging, so as you start to write, it guesses. Just got to make sure it isn’t annoying; which is the thing we’re working on. As for related tags – yes – ideally what we want to do is have the site recognise when different tags are frequently used in the same tag box. Hoxton, shoreditch – for example. That way it can be smart enough to show results for one when searching for the other.
Ok, let’s widen the question to other innovative features you’d like to see generally, not just tags.

Chez told me earlier she wants to see other peoples ticks.

premiumWe were toying with that one but decided it might be a bit harsh for those with out any – as if the rejection wasn’t bad enough. And then you’d have the tick whores who’d do anything for a tick. Just so they look more popular than everyone else. It’d be like high school all over again… shudder

Quite like the idea of a big London map plotting whereabouts various FCLers are based. Or is that a shit idea?

Like a frapper thing?
I like frapper.

Perhaps a “What you’d like to do to this person” feature, whereby you can do a little thumbnail sketch of what you’d like to do any given FCLer. You’re not allowed to write anything, just draw. I’ve done several pictures already, which I’m just gagging to post. Please don’t disappoint me and not implement this as I have my little heart set on it.

Just had to google Frapper…yep, I think that’s what I mean.

premium onlineHow about a longer list of questions on the home page? Currently there’s space for about ten, which means a question posted at 9.00am could have dropped off by midday and no one might ever (sniff) see it again…

premiumDo you mean that Chez wants to see other people’s embarrassing facial movements? A colleague of mine at work must be an absolute nightmare at the dentists, for example. Another one constantly rolls his eyes and makes you think he’s uninterested.
Or are you suggesting that a large number of Fridaycities people have problems with personal hygeine, or like wandering through long, wet grass and collecting blood-sucking parasites?
God, I’ve got bored with my posting already. Sometimes this level of ‘witticism’ I’m sadly displaying deserves to be burnt (along with its author) but I just thought I’d beat all the other pedants to it.
Oh – tags – that’s it. Nope – can’t help on that score.
Innovation generally – lots of restuarants/bars/theatres/cinemas offer all sorts of special offers (2 for 1, for example) that rags like Metro, Evening Standard etc seem to be able to offer their readers – how about some of that? Mini-petitions that could actually be collated and presented to whomever the petition was aimed at.
More when I think of some…

Archie, thats fucking awesome idea. I LOVE it! I think it should be implimented right away…
However, it may be leaving us all wide open to stalkers?

Like the new(ish) favourite Tags (not that I have got round to doing mine – too hard to choose a lot of the time!) However, I often find myself bonding with people over the things I dislike, so maybe we could have a “Least Favourite” tag as well
Posted about 1 year ago by Hilbs

Yeah, we’re trying to work out how to allow anything you like to be tagged but without a gazillion boxes. There’s definitely a way to say you dislike something the most, without a new box. Um… perhaps use hate:xxxxx in about tags? Or even stick the word hate on the front of the tag in favourites. hatebook:xxxxx. Or least? Hmmm….

I think that people responding to a conversation should be able to add tags, as sometimes the original poster won’t think of it all.

Erm, dunno how everyone else feels about this, esp as am on Safari, but should external sites (myspazz etc) open in new windows, so we can come back ‘home’ like the loyal addicts we are, with a little more ease?
