Could somebody please settle something for me and confirm that the opposite of “dog” is indeed “cat”.

Thanks

The opposite of “dog” is “no dog”.

The opposite of “dog” is “no dog”

That doesn’t work – if that was true, the opposite of black would be no black, and the opposite of London Eye would be No London Eye. It’s a fact that the opposite of Black is White, and the opposite of London Eye is The National Gallery.

Dogs, as we all know, are self-referential (i.e. they chase their tails), so the opposite of ‘dog’ is ‘dog’.

What is White if not a complete absence of Black – ie “no Black”?

According to dictionary.com the opposite of dog is ‘leave alone’.

Morals

The opposite of dog would be “not a dog”, so could eb anything, there’s no logical reason it would be “cat”. Applying that logic you cold say the opposite of “Giraffe” is “Guiness”.

The reason white is said to be the opposite of black is probably something to do with light, but even that’s wrong – dark is the absence of light after all. Therefore I’d argue white is not the opposite of black, any more than red is the opposite of “potato”.

oh come on everybody knows the opposite of potato is victoria beckham

Surely the opposite of victoria beckham is anything with more then one brain cell and an ounce of talent?

IMHO The opposite of black, in light terms anyway, is white. One is total absence of light, the other is complete light across the whole spectrum. But the opposite of dog, unless you’re referring to a particular Red Dwarf episode is, as other people say, is ‘not dog’, from a boolean point of view, anyway. It’s like the opposite of 1 is not 1 but you can get into lots of arguments about whether that means zero or -1. To my mind {putting flameproof suit on} the opposite of dog is “attractive bird”.

I work in photography, video etc so work with lighting.

White is all the primary colours of equal density (Red, Blue and Green)

Black is all the seconday colours of equial denisty (Yellow, Cyan and Magenta)

Therefore white is not the opposite of Black but an equal. since setting all three primary colours at zero would give the same result (Black) as would setting all the secondary colours at zero.

The difference comes when setting all the colours at full, the three primary colours would give while light, whereas the three secondary colours would give black light.

I’ll leae it there, don’t want to bore you on a such a dismal morning, it’s pissing it down outside and I’ve got to to and walk a mile or so to a meeting soon, then smile for the client (Yeah, I’m sure).

Cheers

Colin :-) – gotta smile, uses less muscles, less energy and make you look lile a complete prat.

The opposite of dog is clearly the anti-dog.

i’ve just googled it and i’ve been wrong for years, it is red, blue and green. Well that is my whole belief system gone. I can’t believe Mrs Evans lied to me

What would happen if you put a dog and an anti-dog together? Would they just disappear in a great Woof! ? Was the anti-dog the one that was in The Omen?

Sorry, crap joke. BTW I agree with WTM that the primary colours are Red, Blue and Yellow, but in photograph terms they are Red, Blue and Green (which is why you might hear people talk about RBG monitors and the like). But Cobo04 didn’t mention that while you have Cyan, Magenta and Yellow (why am I capitalising all the colours?) you also have Black. So the solution is not as easy as that.

What? Blue and yellow make green, as any fule kno. So if the primary colours are the colours from which all the other colours can be made, logically, Red Blue and Yellow are better then RBG.

Primary colours in light are Red, Blue and Green, primary colours in paint are Red, Blue and Yellow.

Mixing light does not get the same result as mixing the same colours in paint.

difference between transmissive and reflective colours.

Yawn… I thinks I’ll leave it there, I’m boring me !!

That information has surely pushed some other information out of my brain, in the style of Homer Simpson. I demand it back!

What is the matter with you people? Of course the opposite of dog is cat. Everyone knows this. Dogs are the boys and cats are the girls.
