Can anyone recommend a hearty removal firm who would take a small country’s worth of items from Clapham to Forest Hill? We’re hoping to only make one journey – but I don’t think they MAKE lorries that big, so a Transit may have to suffice.

I’m about to use some people called Movers Not Shakers, recommended by my brother, who engaged them solely because he liked their name which is as good a reason as any I can think of. His gamble paid off tho, he said they were great. I’ll let you know after Sunday…

I’d really recommend onlinetaxivans, who moved my friend Karina from Norwood to Sydenham (upgrade!) last year. They were reasonable, efficient, strong and entertaining. I would say that the man who drove the van had a delightful bottom, but all my comments on this site seem to involve finding people attractive when it’s entirely irrelevant to the matter in hand.
His bottom was ever so nice though, and I reckon he was well impressed by how much I could lift.
If you need any furniture after the move (although it seems unlikely from your post), try Deja New on Dartmouth Park Road in Forest Hill. It’s a fantastic second-hand shop with a second-rate name, run by a lovely bloke called Dougal (I fancied him too – what’s wrong with me?), who also reclaims wood to make frames/tables etc. For the sum of £60, I bought four dining room chairs from there that he’d re-upholstered in beautiful fabric – bargain!
Ooh, just one more thing: you have a very jolly pub in your new neighbourhood – The Dartmouth Arms (also on Dartmouth Park Road). It makes yummy food and sells great wine.
Enjoy SE23!

Yes, right, Movers Not Shakers really good. Def recommend. Moved me and about a million boxes (ok maybe thirty) from Battersea to Balham in an hour and a half. I am not joking. Nice blokes too. Polite and everything. I can’t remember their number but Google them, they have a website.

That is good news, Salope- thank you very much. I hope Balham agrees with you!

premiumTry Aussie Man and Van – website is http://www.manandvan.biz/
They are always nice polite lads – do all the lifting and unloading and are reasonably price. They’ll also give you a lift to your new home in their van with them if there is only one of you. I’ve used them 3 times now and my one bed flat worth of stuff fits in one of their Luton vans with plenty of space to spare.

OK – either I’m psychic or I pay too much attention… but didn’t you move to Forest Hill ages ago :-)

Just bumping this dusty old relic of a thread, from back when the board was young, to say that we used Movers Not Shakers yesterday and they were absolutely excellent. The two guys scooped up The World’s Heaviest Oak Bookcase as if it were a pack of bubblewrap. They were friendly, efficient and not that bad looking either (not that I was really concentrating- I kind of saw them through a haze of adrenalin, severe stress and caffiene). So yes, highly recommended. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and have a lie down for about a year to get over this…

Hope it went well! x

I’m knackered, the dog is confused, himself is having a nervous breakdown, but apart from that- everything is absolutely peachy. Just installed my wireless broadband, so that’s the important stuff done.

I know you’ve moved now but I too wouldn’t recommend JonnyVantastic. He moved me from Southampton to Greenwich. However he won’t return my calls as I want to book him for June to move me back for the summer(and then back in September) so I’m appealing to him via the medium of FridayCities in hope people will tell him[/stalkerish]

I was being a sheep, following the trend of moving to Forest Hill and I remembered this thread, on reading it, I decided that booking movers not shakers was a good idea (seeing as all the other kids were doing it). Actually, not the best idea. The last movers I used (admittedly, they cost more) but they were great! they had a roll of cling film type stuff they wrapped around my chests of drawers so they didn’t come open, still all full and picked them up and carried away. Easy. They also wrapped my new white mattress in plastic so it didn’t get all dirty. they were incredibly fit and strong, running up and down the stairs with very heavy objects. And as an added bonus, one of them was hot. (The other was butt ugly, but that’s not relevant). Anyways, I thought seeing as they came so highly recommended, I’d give these so called ‘movers not shakers’ a go. They couldn’t lift my drawers, one of them spent a lot of time standing around watching the other one load the van,( I like to think he was loading the van, I couldn’t see in so I can’t be sure he wasn’t just standing around too, telling the lazy, weak one amusing anecdotes) Eventually I started taking the furniture out to the lift myself, because if I waited for them to do it, it would have taken another hour. When they came back upstairs and saw that I had brought out two chests of drawers and a bookcase in the time it had taken them to take a few boxes down(in the lift, it’s not like they had to carry stuff down the stairs!) they must have felt a bit useless, because they did seem to speed up a little after that. They had no tools so couldn’t take my bed apart, I had to leave it behind. And to top it off, my mattress looks like they just dragged it up the stairs. It’s filthy.
I wouldn’t recommend them.
