Rag & Bone man!

I was sitting in my front room in Plaistow when I heard this strange sound. Looked out of the window and a really old open-backed truck with junk in the back was going past at about 2 mph, and the driver – a wizzened old man – was hanging out of the window shaking a bell and shouting “Any old iron” or something like that.
I hadn’t seen anything like that before since, since, well, never – old episodes of Steptoe & Son I guess! Whatever next, 10 year old soot-blackened chimney sweeps knocking on the door?

“Bring out your dead”.
“I’m not dead yet”.

premiumWe’ve had a rag-and-bone man (maybe the very same one) plying his trade in his battered little truck where i used to live in Mile End, for years.
I think you’ll find what he actually says is “yoldiYAAAN”

We have one in Tooting. He clangs down my road every Saturday, on a battered cart pulled by a knackered horse. Poor horse. Poor cart. Poor bloke.
