Question of the Day: Which London organisation should be fined? And for what?

With water watchdog Ofwat (try saying that three times fast) set to fine Thames Water £12m for “inadequate” reporting and customer service we found ourselves wondering which other organisations should be fined for letting Londoners down.

We at Fridaycities would like to see the Metro fined at least £12m for the execrable ‘Nemi’ while London Bridge overground station should be fined at least half that amount for having no public toilets on the main concourse. It’s really annoying, especially when we’re drunk.

So, tell us, who else should be fined; how much and for what?

Waterloo tube station should be fined for the everlasting smell of vomit that pervades its tunnels. Not nice with a hangover.

(and totally agree with Nemi)

GLA, more so Ken L for :

1. Telling everyone the tube would get better, but it hasn’t.

2. Telling everyone the congestion zone wouldn’t be extended, next stop is the M25 area.

3. Just being there and letting us all down in some major way.

Cobs – you’ve got a real thing about Uncle Ken, haven’t you? Has he not let you play with his newts or something? Up until now I’ve never doubted your memory but I’m beginning to wonder: Don’t you remember what tube ticketing used to be like before the GLC smacked some sense into it, for example? How every bit of public transport that could be fragmented, was? That the level of racism in the police, for example, was waaay higher than it is now?

I could go on. But I’m not answering the original question in the thread. Sorry. Ahem.

I would fine the various London councils for stupidity such as not allowing dustbins to be left out the night before collection (what about shift workers?), selling off council houses for gerrymandering purposes, ensuring that their traffic wardens are paid commission so that they show no mercy.

I would fine Southwest trains for being wankers with their fucking engineering works and bullshit excuses for late trains like “leaves on the line”.

They do their fucking engineering work on Sundays, which yes, i understand its quieter, but pisses me off because I have to get to work in the middle of nowhere, with only one train an hour an hour anyway- and end up getting turfed onto a death trap of a replacement bus service.

A replacement bus service. Thats all my overpriced season ticket seems to pay for. And half the time they don’t even check the tickets anyway, so i may as well jsut travel for free. You can gaurantee that the day I don’t buy a ticket is the day I’m fined. Wankers.

So, Southwest fucking trains- fine them for poor service, jobsworth staff, rude ticket sellers, overpriced tickets, no proper first class.

The fine should be £20 pentalty fare or twice the normal single fare (which ever is greater) to every single sad individaul who contributes to their sorry excuse for a service.

Leaves on the line is actually a valid excuse, something to do with the brakes, makes them less effective.

Not in June it’s not! Not that that’s actually happened, of course.

Anyway, fining people. How about those responsible for not building Crossrail yet? Fucking bastards. I really want to travel from Maidenhead to Shenfield, and certainly back again, and these procrastinators are denying me and thousands of other decent hard-working folk the opportunity.

I’d levy a huge fine and possibly a custodial sentence on everyone involved with Metro, thelondonpaper and Londonlite.Oh, you already mentioned Metro. What’s ‘nemi’, though?

I’d fine Virgin Radio for basically being the audio arm of Sky but without coming clean and admitting it.

I’d fine Mechris3, just for the hell of it. And Foxtons for the usual reasons.

Pottytime – I do remember what public transport was live before the GLC/GLA, about as bad as it is today, just under a different management and name, excuses are about the same.

I have actually met with Ken L a few times while I was out on video shoots. He’s not a bad chap to speak with but don’t get him on his wrong side – more so if you look a but Jewish, you might get told where your father worked !!! (oops, he did that didn’t he, and got a away with it !!).

See – thousands of us are building bridges between religions and cultures, then one cunt comes along and destroys it all.

Ah, well, case closed.

Leaves on the line. as a train travels along it joins the small current between the two tracks and, by doing so, lets signal people know where the train is. If there are a trail of wet leaves between the tracks connecting the current, to the detectors it looks like a stationary train – result being they don’t know where the hell the actual train is and so it has to go slowly and carefully and get more and more delayed. Frozen leaves make the train skid and reduce the stopping distance of an intercity from 1/2 mile to about 3 miles.

A train only has one job – to go along a fixed route in a set amount of time. Britain can’t even do this right – and we have GPS! We recycle everything we can to cut down on the use of energy/oil then drive around in cars and curse cyclists for being annoying bastards. When we try to be good global citizens and take the train cross-country, the ticket prices are so extortionate it’s cheaper to hire a car. we’re rubbish and we’re hypocrites. Fine us the british people for everything we’ve got. we deserve it.

Cobo, he said that to a “journalist” from the Evening Substandard. A paper owned by the Mail group, a paper with a history of supporting fascism and who only a few years ago held a Nazi themed fancy dress party. He also got let off due to the hearing going something like this…

Finegold: Ken compared me to a Nazi and I’m Jewish and therefore offended

Judge: Who do you work for?

Finegold: The Evening Standard, part of the Mail group.

Judge: Get the fuck out of my courtroom you two faced cunt.

ET – okay, understand a bit more now, thanks.

Still doesn’t give him the okay to insult another person with intent, does it.

I always find the unintentional insult more effective.

I think the Heathrow Express should be fined for charging £15 for a journey that costs a quarter of that on the tube and doesn’t even get you (ok, me) to a useful part of London on the way back. And Eurostar (do they count?) should be fined for having the least useful website in the world, whose only discernible function is to supply a phone number, which is what you need if you want any actual information about when trains are running and how to buy tickets.

Eurostar website is indeed a shocker. I think it was designed by embittered programmers taking revenge on the world.

The Eurostar website wasn’t built by programmers; it was grown in a vat by their marketing department.

Personally, I would fine every one of the free newspapers: Metro, thelondonpaper, London Lite, City AM and myfreesport, the sum of a pound each issue for cluttering up my tube trains in the miornings and evenings with junk mail.

not stricly london but it’ll do – the cafe nero outside westminster tube for taking 20 minutes to serve you.

I second MikeWembley’s suggestion. In a similar vein I would fine each and every one of their street muggers the sum of one smart kick in the nuts/gash every time they thrust one of their useless rags in your face. These days I find that the dirty look and brusque shake-of-the-head which I had described in a previous thread no longer seems to work as well, so it’s time to start fining them accordingly.

I thought about the fine being a punch in the face but (i) it would mess up my knuckles eventually and (ii) if you kick em in the nuts/gash it means they can’t stand up properly and go on to mug other passers-by with their tat.

Ahem, fining the freeshit purveyors was actually my suggestion, six posts in. These things are important.
