Question of the Day, part two: is lunchtime boozing really such a good idea?

Further to this conversation here, is there not something to be said for abstinence?
Further still, is lunchtime drinking something you do a lot of? Is it something you’d like to do a lot more of? Are you not concerned that your job might suffer? Are you not concerned that your liver might suffer? And is it not a very thin line between lunchtime drinking and full-blown alcoholism? Or are we just being a bit square even to suggest the link?
If your brain still has the ability to form them, let’s hear your thoughts!

It makes the afternoon fly by! And besides, unless you’re a brain surgeon or a bus driver it can’t do any harm can it?
Hmmm…I wonder what this button does…

Nope. I don’t do much of it. Once a week at most.
It is something I’d like to do more of, hence the FCL SLP Club™.
My job may suffer if I have more than two pints, and my liver might suffer if I do it more than once a week.
But as for the thin line, no.
I could get run over by a bus tomorrow. And as for eating bacon giving you cancer …

I’m not pork. Love a sneaky lunchtime pint though.

I can’t do it. I usually have a fairly high tolerance to booze but if I know I’m going back to the office, one glass of wine gets me shitfaced.

Until quite recently I used to drink half a bottle of wine at least three times a week for lunch and never really saw it was a problem. Then someone I was seeing for a while suggested that it probably was a problem. I’m still not convinced but they do say that admitting you’ve got a problem is the hardest part. But what if you haven’t got a problem? You’re bound to say you haven’t got one, and then people are going to say, ‘ah but you would say that, because you’re in denial’. But what if i’m only denying it because it isn’t true? You know? Jesus, it’s annoying. That’s why I only drink a couple of double whiskeys at lunch these days. And a pair of pints.

Half a bottle’s only two glasses, isn’t it?...but I find I just can’t be arsed to do anything all afternoon if I’ve been to the pub at lunch so it only happens occasionally, or when I can stay in the pub all afternoon, which is lovely.

premiumWhen I used to work on a paper, it was the norm to have three or six pints of a lunchtime. My afternoon copy was always better. But, it makes me feel sick, and there’s nothing more annoying than having to stop drinking and re-start work. These days, all journalists are namby pamby lunctime tee-totallers, etc etc Of course, now I work from home, the occasional 10.30am gin and tonic simply serves to remind me of the joys of working for yourself.

Um, we have a beer fridge at work. We’re not allowed to put food in it. Our boss disapproves. The fride is the beer fridge. We drink a lot.
I’m drunk right now.
