Public karaoke: where can I sing horribly and make strangers listen?

I know we had a thread that was nearly but not quite about this but I need more specific suggestions.

For my up-coming birthday celebrations (there will be a lot of them) I am having a karkoke night for all my lady friends only (sorry boys) and we want to go somewhere central and public.

So none of these private karaoke rooms where you can hide you cracked tones behind soundproofed walls.

And nowhere that people are really good as we will not be and do not intend to be

I have been to Murphis near Farringdon before. And that was quite fabulous but is too far for everyone to get there after work (a lot of people coming live a few stops from Waterloo).

So I am looking for public karaoke, near Waterloo/Soho, on a friday night.

Any ideas? Any good cheesey clubs and bars in the area will get you shiny extra kudos.

Folks, stop hiding your karaoke shame. We all know you do it…

I’ve never been in but I have often walked past niko niko on percy street, which is a sushi bar and karaoke place.

edit: oh, I was trying to add a map, but that somehow posted my comment, and I can’t seem to add a map on the edit page…, here it is anyway http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=W1T+1DY

Rogan, thanks. Have a kudo for the map you did not get to place.

Anyone else?

I know this is totally out of your area but it’s very very special. The Dolphin, Hackney. Public rock n roll karaoke till 4 in the morning. Yes.

Gah. Can’t do the location on the map. Boo.

I would just like to heartily applaud the concept of public as opposed to private karaoke. None of this silly private rooms carry-on. Boring!!

Also, didn’t someone recommend this place in Chinatown once:

Soho has a disturbing lack of public karaoke. It should be ashamed of itself. If you can be arsed to hop on a bus though, Murphis Karaoke in Old Street is hilarious. A group of us went for a birthday a while ago and there’s a dancefloor, and badly-spelled lyrics (‘Libyan On A Jet Plane’? Hell yes). It’s loads of fun and everyone joins into one big group.

I loved Murphis last time I went but it was such a bugger to get home from at a late hour when you live near Wimbledon… :(

The private karaoke rooms at the bloomsbury bowling lanes look like a lot of fun though, and you can leave the curtains open!

and thanks for the kudo! I’d have added a map here again, but the whole thing’s just too slow at the minute

Yeah, I’ve done karaoke at Bloomsbury bowling lanes and at Lucky Voice in Soho and both times I’ve shamed myself in public despite them being private rooms.

Try Trafalgar Square with a self-powered amp, a microphone and the backing tunes for Kylie’s greatest hits?

my suggestion would have been murphis – been there many times but have only recently found out it’s name.

retro bar off the strand used to do kareoke, but not sure if they still do it or what night

Murphis is looking more and more likely.

I am not sure they like me in the Retro Bar. It is some kind of knitting prejudice. Scandalous, eh?

Willster, as a last resort that sounds fab. :)

There’s a massive Irish pub just off Piccadilly Circus that I think is called O’Connells. I seem to recall it does both public karaoke and cover band nights where everyone sings along so it sounds and feels just like karaoke anyway. It’s a little filthy but hilarious to round the night off with.

There’s also a restaurant in East Sheen (not Wimbledon I know, but south) that passes the microphone from table to table. Never been myself but always heard good things.

ooooooh, might I suggest a shenanigans called Rockaoke on Thursdays at the Zoo Bar in Soho? (OK, so it’s not Friday, but I’ve been assured by those in the know that Thursday is the new Friday anyway.)

Basically, it’s like karaoke but you sing with a live band like a real rock star. (If I was the type to use lots of exclamation marks I’d use them here, but I’m not.)

Given that I am tone deaf, I’ve never tried it, but friends of mine said it was oodles of fun, and you get to live out your Avril Lavigne / Ricky from the Kaiser Chiefs fantasies in front of a crowded bar.

Anyway, take a look www.rockaoke.co.uk
