Is anyone else as furious as me about this whole Live Earth shenanigan? How dare people like Madonna etc, who have a carbon footprint the size of a small (or, actually, probably rather large) African country preach to the rest of us about being environmentally concious. Grrrrr!!! I’m thinking about standing outside the stadium on the day, with a selection of friends, placards and (possibly) a megaphone or two, to protest about this. Would anyone be interested in joining us?

What did we do in the old days before carbon footprints existed?

I went to the Stop Climate Chaos event in Trafalgar Square earlier this year and ended up leaving because it was such a load of arse. I wrote to them about it but got no response, which was disappointing. I just didn’t understand what the celebs and the religious dudes were doing there. And they had a comedian as a host, who so obviously didn’t give a shit about the issue and knew nothing. The last straw was when some celeb came on (some actress) and immediately said: I’m not a scientist, I’m not an expert… and I immediately though – well who the fuck gave you the mic then? So she proceeded to thank us for turning off lightbulbs. Oh. Jaysus. I know she meant well but seriously…
So anyhoo, I feel your pain… but do you have a mission or is it just to go and say oi no? And where is the event taking place?

I heard about this on the radio this morning, and thought it was such a monumentally stupid idea I had to check I hadn’t entered a timeslip and gone back to April 1.
“Hey guys, I reckon we’re all using too much power, so why don’t we fly in a load of pop-stars from around the world, and put up lights and amps, and film it on loads of cameras and encourage millions of people to turn on their T.V.s and watch it!”

Seriously?
I’m conflicted about this, though. It is a pile of wank, but then again that poll suggested that 56% of the public think there really is a serious scientific debate about climate change.
Some of these will undoubtedly be sorts like our chum Part-Timer, who has at least bothered to come to his own (very probably wrong, but entirely respectable) belief on the subject. However, mightn’t the bulk be those who just don’t buy man-made climate change for reasons such as ‘the Earth’s big, we’re small’ and other assorted nonsense that Jeremy Clarkson’s told them.
Aren’t the latter group precisely the sort who’ll be convinced by that wiry attention junky telling them what to do, more than innumerable Guardian articles, the IPCC report, etc.? By ‘the latter group’, I mean stupid people, obviously. The thing probably creates a bunch of emissions, but if (because Madonna tells them to) enough people turn their things off standby, insulate their houses, pop a few energy savers in, isn’t it net positive for climate change?
I am aware of how patronising and paternalistic this sounds. I hate myself for it, but I’m increasingly convinced by the evidence that a substantial group of people in the country are divots. Umbrella-la-la-la.
