People who sit in aisle seats for no good reason should be beaten to death. Discuss...

Is it just me or are some of the most annoying people in London those selfish bastards who sit in the aisle seats of buses and trains, deliberately leaving the window seats empty and difficult to reach? Why do they do it? Why? I hate them.

Presumably they do it because they just assume that they’re going to be getting off the bus first, before whoever might sit next to them if they happen to sit by the window. I presume this because when someone says to them, ‘Excuse me’, they invariably stand up and force that person to shuffle past them, rather than just shifting up themselves.

Incredibly annoying.

Or maybe it’s just that they don’t like being penned in. Well tough shit. You’re on a fucking bus. It’s public transport. Deal with it. And stop being such a self-centred piece of shit.

Thank you, that is all.

Maybe they’re claustrophobic. Maybe they’re being nice and want someone else to have the window seat so they can enjoy the view. Maybe finding something worth getting quite so aggravated about would be a good idea. Maybe they got there first so can sit where the fuck they want to. Deal with it? Damned good idea.

i prefer to sit in the aisle seat on the bus on the way to work – mostly because the heaters are blowing really hot air which is too much in the mornings. however if the bus fills up i will shuffle over to the window seat before anyone asks. hope thats allowed!

It might seem like a small thing, but many of us spend a good chunk of the day commuting and encountering cock-like behaviour (of which aisle seat hogging is right up there) can get the day off to a bad start, so yes, I think it IS worth getting aggravated about.

Edit: putting your bag on the seat next to you is another offence that should be punishable by swift application of a flame-thrower to the head

“hate” is a bit strong though isn’t it?

Pan ’..tough shit. You’re on a fucking bus. It’s public transport. Deal with it. And stop being such a self-centred piece of shit.’

Alternatively – dont use the fucking bus.

Yes, but both seats are within the aisle-person’s territory and it is therefore up to them to decide whether they shift over or stand up and let you sit in the window seat.

Plus, if you retain the aisle seat there’s always the possibility of some subtle bum-face action as the other person squeezes past you to get off.

BTW if aisle-sitters move when the bus starts to fill up, that is OK of course… I’ve got no problems with people sitting in aisle seats if the bus is half-empty.

The driver always bags the seat at the front! That makes me so fucking angry I occasionally void my bowels.

I’m with Pan. Selfish aisle bastards.

Nicely phrased. Very subtle

Haha, SuckMonster, “bum-face” action!

If they don’t move over to the window, I usually make a point of standing on their toes on the squeeze past.

Why should I not use the bus? I like buses. Plus I have no choice most days. I just think they should be used with a little consideration for others. I think blocking the window seat is up there with blaring out iPod music.

Agreed. It’s when the bus is full and you see people who think ‘I really want to sit down but can I be bothered to disturb that evil-looking bastard and risk his scowling at me and then have to struggle past him with all my bags? No, I can’t.’ And they’re usually men in my experience, and always evil-looking.

I’m surprised people are arguing with me on this. It seems cut and dry to me. It’s like not standing up for oldies or the lame.

ouch!

I have not had the pleasure of riding in a bus for many years. However, I seem to remember paying for ticket and sitting pretty much where I pleased, as long as it wasn’t on someone else’s lap, or in the drivers seat.

If I had to squeeze past someone who preferred to sit in an aisle seat then so be it, he/she has paid money presumably, and was there first.

I figure like most things you have a few choices,- tell the offending person to move their arse, ask them why they so ill-mannered, get a bike, hitch, not use the fucking bus….

BTW I ain’t saying you are wrong. I just don’t give a shit, because I don’t use a bus.

So there.

God what is it about the self-righteous whinges on this site today? Its a bus.. you can sit where you like on it. If you want to sit on an aisle you can. Why is it even a problem if you have to squeeze past someone? Its what.. 5 seconds of your life that presumably you wont miss.

Alternatively, If you cant beat them, join them.. start sitting on the aisle seats, and then after a while, you can change what is quite clearly some kind of cult out to upset you from within until they all automatically sit at windows.

What a surprisingly trivial issue to be expending so much nervous energy over. I’m sure people have lots of reasons why they want to sit in the aisle seat. I don’t see the problem with saying “excuse me can I get in?” when you’re in that situation: I know it’s a crazy notion but give it a go, it seems to work for me.

Conversely, if you see me sitting in an aisle seat (although usually I like to sit licking the window), all you need to say is, “excuse me”, and I will gladly move over/stand up/move my legs out to let you in. It really is as easy as that.

While there are many things about people’s lack of consideration in London that get on my tits, I’m afraid I can’t bring myself to get annoyed about this one.

I bet you’re not evil-looking though, SFULG. It’s never that easy if they’re evil-looking...

Look. It might seem a trivial thing but it is symptomatic of the general selfishness that is endemic on public transport, and that is why it riles me.

People: blocking seats in this way on a crowded bus is not just selfish, it is passive-aggressive and implies that your quirky seating whims and/or window phobia take precedence over basic courtesy towards your fellow passengers. It’s like people who put their feet up on the seats, drop their coke cans in the aisle or listen to music loudly on their phones. On a philosophical level it’s a fundamental breach of the social contract that determines that public services are just that – for the public, and not just for you.

I’m not talking about people who sit in the aisle seat, then pay attention to people entering the bus and, if someone is obviously scouting for a seat, either stand to let them sit or move over. I’m talking about the people who sit their sulkily ignoring the people piling onto the bus.

Those of us who find it aggravating, do so not only out of annoyance at having to squeeze past someone while loaded with bags (and/or be reduced to asking permission to do something as basic as sit down on a crowded bus as if the person blocking the way had some kind of preferential status), but ALSO because it is something we would never inflict on someone else because WE ARE NICE, POLITE, CONSIDERATE users of public transport, and it dismays to be constantly reminded that others are letting the side down. Whether it’s by blocking seats, using them as luggage holders, refusing to stand for people walking with canes. etc.
