The best thing about Germany in summer is the myriad of local ice-cream cafes. Often run by Italian-German couples, these independent places sell a wide menu of carefully crafted, yet grossly proportioned sundaes at reasonable prices. In London, I only know of dingy franchised cafes selling Unilever subsidiary branded rubbish. The comparison couldn’t be sadder. Is there a decent ice-cream cafe in London?

Marine Ices, bottom end of Haverstock Hill. opposite Chalk Farm tube station, has been serving genuine Italian ice creams for over 70 years, I’ve been going there for over 40 years. Quite simply It’s the best ice cream this side of Naples.
Food and coffees not bad either. Walls are crammed out with famous names plaques who have eaten there in the past. Also popular for children’s parties in the daytime. Not cheap, £1.10 a scoop, £3-£4 for the more exotic dishes but what do you want for quality water ices using only fruit pulp or in season crop, as well as a range of the more fattening variety sundaes and knickerbocker glories? They do ice cream floats as well. About 30 - 40 different flavours. And they do take away in tubs so best to arrive with a cool box or bag if your freezer has got room.

Zilli Cafe on Brewer street does possibly the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted in London. I like to pop round there from work in the summer and walk sloooowly back, nothing like a good bit of ice cream as a good excuse to skive!

There’s one ice-cream place on the Charing X road – walk up from the National Portrait Gallery towards Leicester Square, and it’s on the left (after the art supplies place, before the Barclays). Don’t know if it’s any good, but there’s always a huge variety of italian ice creams in the window.

Yes – there’s a new place just opened up called Scoop in Short’s Gardens, Covent Garden (between Endell and Neal Streets)
Very Italian, very very very nice – and now is the weather for it

La Bottega del gelato, Bayswater, opposite Kensington Gardens. Italian husband and wife team, lush. http://uk.geocities.com/russellhogan@btopenworld.com/

There is of course the Haagen-Dazs cafe in Leicester Square but this is probably a bit too commercial and not the wholesome type cafe you were looking for.
