Is The Brief really the best pub in Croydon?

i’m having to spend a few days in Croydon this week, it seems that the bloke who flogged me a bunch of white goods didn’t actually own them. So anyway, as I was leaving the station heading up to the courts I noticed a sign which announced a bunch of bars, restaurants and pubs etc as award winners in the area. Needing a little liquid refreshment at lunchtime I went to The Brief, which apparently won “best pub”.

Now there’s nothing particularly wrong with the place, reasonable high street location and ok beer, but the food was nothing to write home about and quite frankly I wasn’t that impressed.

So here’s a question for anyone on here that lives in Kate Moss’s home town, is there anywhere better? Or is Croydon truly the cats anus?

The best pub in Croydon is Beer Circus. I’m not sure where The Brief got their award. Probably nicked it. Bloody lawyers.

The Ship is okay in a grungy rocker/studenty kinda way but Croydon ain’t exactly pub heaven.

Beer circus is definitely good – my other suggestion would be The Oval Tavern, fairly near East Croydon station. It has a dart board and pool table!

Another option is just up the road (well, Cherry Orchard Road) and is called The Glamorgan

Having just looked it up, I remember The Old Brief now. It has an area out the back for gigs, the noise of which writes off the rest of the pub as a palce to sit and have a chat. On the plus side, you don’t have to pay the 6 quid to get into the back bit, as it’s perfectly audible from the main bit.

If the weather’s nice, the Dog & Bull just behind the main shopping street has a fantastic beer garden. But if the weather isn’t nice, the Dog & Bull, just behind the main shopping street, is a tatty shithole. There’s some nicer bars out to the south of the centre, though I can’t recall the names.

Thanks all, looks like I’ll be busy checking them all out this week. Will let you know if and when I get off and the beers are on me!

I used to love the Ship. Once got chatted-up in there by a girl whose trump card was to whip out a tin of Spam and slam it down on the bar. My mate Neil was utterly transfixed ‘You’re mentally undressing it aren’t you.’ the girl said ‘yeah’ replied Neil without taking his eyes off the can.

Oooh the Dog and Bull is a brilliant pub, lovely beer garden and then when it starts pissing down (as it is want to do lately) the inside is like stepping back in time with flock wallpaper and old sailors propping up the bar. I dread to think what it smells like in there since the smoking ban came into effect.

It’s beyond impossible to find a good pub in Croydon as it’s all Tiger Tigers and Walkabouts these days. However, The Black Sheep Bar will always hold a special place in my heart. I always go there when i’m back home for Christmas, these days it’s full of Emo youths, it’s great to laugh at them, especially when the DJ takes the piss by playing Dolly Parton!
