Can anyone recommend something cultural for me to do on Saturday late afternoon/early evening in Zone 1? My husband and I were considering the boring old cinema, but there isn’t really anything that appeals to us at the moment. I thought it might be nice to see an exhibition, or do an organised walk, but seem to be a little too spoilt for choice. Is there anything unmissable on at the moment?

But Indiana Jones is on at the cinema.

premiumThe Jack the Ripper exhibition at the Museum of London Docklands is very good. It’s £7 a head, so it’s not cheap, but it’s very well done. And the whole setting of the museum is great. And there’s also the black slavery exhibition on at the moment there, which is also very well presented.
Well worth a gander.

There’s a bit where he survives a close-quarters nuclear blast.

Saw an advert for this yesterday at the British Library:

Exhibition on the Ramayana. (One of the Hindu scriptures.)
Lots and lots of very cool 17th century Indian manuscript illustrations. Am definitely going to go – I absolutely love that kind of stuff.
Probably not unmissable if you’re not that into Indian manuscript illustrations or Hindu mythology, though…

There’s a psycho buildings exhibition at the Hayward:

It sounds interesting, doing weird things architecturally including turning rooms into floating doll houses and showing rooms blown up. My friend went and went on about it, he liked the duck pond on the top of the building, and mentioned rowing across that. I should have listened more as can’t tell you anything else.

Cy Twombly at the Tate Modern.
That’s where I’m going on Saturday.

Have you done Tutankhamun yet?

I’m not really up for Tutankhamun. I’m not really sure why, as I do like a nice lost civilisation. I think it’s because I’m a bit saturated with Minoans, after my holiday.

The American Scene exhibition at the British Museum looks ace – and it’s FREE.

I went to the Psycho Buildings exhibition and it’s brilliant – definitely go. There’s about 10 or 12 different installations, so it takes a couple of hours to go round, although you have to queue for the boating lake and the big plastic ball thing so it might take longer now (I went just after it started and it was fairly empty). They are all worth it though.

Indiana Jones doesn’t appear to have any evening performances! :O So that rules that one out.
I’d come across Psycho Buildings and the Ripper exhibitions through my rudimentary search – I’m glad to hear that they’re good, either of those would suit me. Also, they’re both indoors; sadly imperative, viewing this Saturday’s bastard weather forecast.
I will donate the kudo to the winning suggestion!

Any Saturday? Or just this Saturday? Does it have to be cultural? How about fun? Go to the roller disco on the South Bank on July 13th! Or you could go watch the Lion 3D film at the iMax. Or do you think your husband might like to take you up the Oxo Tower? Mind Over Matter – the Storm Thorgerson Pink Floyd exhibition is on from July 24th.

there are stacks of architecture-related things on all over zone 1 on Saturday as we are bang in the middle of London Festival of Architecture see www.lfa2008.org (I can’t be the only one who has been quite beside themselves with excitement about this and whizzing about trying to do as many of the events as possible…er yes, well perhaps I am actually the only sad – but lovely – buildings geek on here)

It needs to be this Saturday, as I’m at a rare loose end. The diary is otherwise looking pleasingly busy between now and the end of August when I emigrate. :)

Cy Twombly at the Tate Modern is terrible. 12 rooms of exhibition. 9 rooms of paintings that could have been done by a three year old. 2 rooms of sculptures of things that it’s very likely Cy Twombly hadn’t seen – I judge this from the sculptures produced – picture a boat made out of a single plank with a bit of whitewash. 1 room of paintings of water that looked like it had been done by someone else. The difference in style and skill was that different.
On the plus side you can leave the museum and go into the Street Art bit and write rude words on the wall.
The photography exhibit is better.

How about this?

The whole thing looks intriguing. Different, at least.
I can vouch for Psycho Buildings too – impressive and genuinely good fun. Although the initial appeal of the suspended red fabric staircase had waned after an hour looking at it while queueing for the boating lake. If you fancy a laugh check out the crochet coral reef there too. That bit’s free. Understandably.

I did the Psycho Buildings in the end. It was certainly interesting, but bloody expensive! I hoped for more than an hour of entertainment of viewing for the price!
I loved the dolls’ houses. A model I had as a child in the late 70s was featured, to my utter surprise. It was great to see it.
