I need to buy a car. Where do I go so I don't get ripped off?

I don’t need a car at the moment living in Crouch End but we’re hopefully moving to Enfield later in the year (if anyone will buy our flat. Anyone want to buy a lovely little one bedroom flat in Crouch End???). Once we’re in Enfield the other half will need to drive to Alexandra Palace to play ice hockey so we’ll need to buy a car. I don’t want anything flash, just a small reliable runaround for less than £1,000.
Does anyone know of somewhere, preferably in north London, that does cheap reliable cars? I don’t want to get done over and the other half hasn’t got a clue about such things so we need someone trustworthy. Or am I looking for the impossible, an honest second hand car dealer?!
Failing that, anyone have a car they want to sell me?

If you end up going to a franchise dealership make sure you go at the end of the month. They’ll be keen to meet targets and you could probably pick something up dirt cheap just for them to make up the numbers.
Failing that go out on the street and find the car you want and leave the folowing note under the car windscreen:
“You give car me 500 pounds thank you please bye”
