Have you noticed the music on the Underground?

Over the last few weeks, my two commute tube stations Balham and Clapham Common have been piping classical music onto the concourse. Obviously, these two are both on the Northern Line and only a few stops appart, has anyone elso noticed this on any other stations/lines? Is this a new way of calming us on our commute?

The only thing I noticed last time I was on the Northen Line (Saturday night) was the rather cute girl wearing a white FCUK top, combat trousers and glasses. Regular glasses, not combat glasses. That and the girl next to me who was wearing a greyhound skirt and stilletoes.

Didn’t notice any piped classical music though

They did do this in Brixton station, in the ticket hall. I believe the intention was soothing the crackheads, rather than your common or garden commuter. Although that could be an urban legend…..

There’s not much info in the UK press about this, but apprently it began at Vauxhall and Brixton as a pilot scheme to deter groups of ‘yooves’ from hanging around and causing trouble. I guess it’s fully-fledged and no longer a pilot scheme now!

they’re doing it at manor house too. I keep jolting each time I hear it. I look at the staff and they seem to be smiling. I never smiled when I worked on the underground. Wish they’d done it then. It’s nice. There must me something in classical music making you feel better. I almost feel tempted to indulge in a CD or 2. It’s like the thought of the day at clapham north, that always makes me feel all warm and glowy inside.

Ravenscourt Park on the district line too. Better than that high-pitched mosquito noise they use to get rid of the kids.

they were at it at Manor Park last saturday (piping music that is)

i reckon it’s why there’s so much yoof stabbing each other these days

They started doing it at Kensal Green station (my local) too – after that poor lawyer was mugged and murdered last year. I think it just makes them scarper for fear of becoming prematurely white and middle-aged.

Ooer, was that racist?

Yes. It’s fucking horrendous. Also, doesn’t it jsut encourage all the yoof to play their own music on their crappy tinny mobile phones all the louder to drown it out?

The pilot scheme was complete fucking genius, and I’m glad they’re rolling it out. It’s now reached Tooting Broadway. Supposed hard-bastard yout’ who can’t handle a bit of Brahms. Hilarious.

There was some mickey mouse research carried by LU where they showed that classical music reduces crimes in stations. It is a old and interesting theory. I wonder whether the tube is going to evaluate this measure in the future. It could be an interesting read…

Hammersmith bus stration has been pumping out random classical music for ages. I don’t ever remember it not doing so.

Not noticed any music, but what’s up with the blue lighting on the platforms at Belsize Park and Chalk Farm? You get off there and feel like you’re in a giant bug zapping unit.

I love it at Brixton – heading down the escalator to Wagners’ Ride of the Valkyries! Doesn’t get any better!!

Yes, they first developed this on the Metro back home in Newcastle a few years ago as a way of repelling the scum from hanging round the stations. It seems to work, and it’s rather pleasant – apparently “levels of assault on the Metro system fell by a quarter in 2005 and criminal damage was down by 20%”.

What worries me is what if it goes like antibiotics did? It’s all very well now enjoying chav-free stations thanks to a bit of Tchaikovsky, but it can only last until a Chav evolves that likes the 1812 Overture or at least has a resistance. A superchav. Chav Difficile, if you will. And what the bollocks are we going to do then?

Music should never be used as a weapon. In particular this misguided policy can only alienate young people yet further from classical music. It is mindless.

At about 1130 last night they were playing a lot of rather scary Wagner at Vauxhall. Not relaxing at all—got kind of menaced whilst taking cash out…

Apparently somewhere in Oz they started playing Barry Manilow on the streets to disperse gangs of yoot, but had to stop when residents said they could hear it in their own houses. Imagine that. Barry Manilow being pumped into your house, all night.

Add Stockwell to the list. All for it. Move the yobs on somewhere else to do their mugging.
