My charming colleagues and I have just moved offices from Soho to Clerkenwell. Quite a change of pace, which has been welcomed by all. However, we’re still exploring the fab area for a) lunchtime spots, good sandwich shops, excellent takeaways and b) after-work boozing spots and Friday evening falling-over establishments.
Can any of you out there recommend favourites falling into either category?
(We’ve already sampled the delights of the Crown on Clerkenwell Green – utterly brilliant!)
Thanks in advance…

Exmouth market and Exmouth market. It has loads of food stalls which are perfect for lunch (particularly Freebird burritos – the best darn burritos in London, and mamoth whoppers of meaty goodness, too). For after work, there are a few drink places, from casual outdoor pubby place to Cafe Kick with brilliant brazilan drinks and table football. It’s the best part od being in Clerkenwell.

The Slaughtered Lamb on Great Sutton Street – excellent fishfinger sandwiches, good beer and live music downstairs.

premiumIf you want a burger lunch go to tinderbox (?) on St John St.
good burgers, chips, the best milkshake you’ll ever drink…

I second the slaughtered lamb. There’s also a little pub/wine bar type place on St John St that I can’t remember the name of which is quite nice too. It’s on the corner of a junction but that’s all I can remember, sorry.

I’m rather fond of the Dovetail on Jerusalem Passage – the food is great (mussels, chips, burgers, sausage and mash in interesting varieties – wild boar and the like) and they have a seemingly endless variety of Belgian beers to work your way through (I like the honey beer myself).

Welcome to clerkenwell!
The three kings is a great pub, just up from the crown (you need cash though, they don’t take cards)
I agree about exmouth market, there are loads of places there, and there is a food market there every friday.
There is a sushi place on farringdon road that’s good, head up the road towards kings cross. also the sushi place near farringdon station reduces it’s food to half price after 5pm
Leather lane has loads of food places too and most are really cheap
for late night place, it has to be murphis, the kareoke place on clerkenwell road

Flaneur is supposed to be a really good deli/caf

There’s a great old-school pub that still has pool tables and darts on Rosebery Avenue, called The Wilmington Arms.
There also used to be great pub on Tysoe Street called O’Hanlons that brewed its own beer. Not sure if it’s still there, though.
The Peasant on St John St does good, if possibly slightly overpriced, food

I second the Welcome to Clerkenwell, but keep it under your hat old boy. We don’t want all of those tossers from Soho coming over here. Anyway…
For lunch, Flaneur is very nice and they do some very nice pies that you can take away and microwave. Pho (vietnamese noodles etc) on St John St is brilliant, but gets a little busy. Exmouth market is also good, but I’ve never seen this Burrito place that MonkeysAhoy raves about and am thinking that it’s some kind of elaborate ruse. What I can’t figure out is the “why” of said ruse. Oh…Little Bay on Farringdon Road is also great for cheap eats.
There are also a fair few decent gastropubs around the area, the Eagle, the Peasant, the Well, Coach & Horses and the Devilled Nipple (I made that last one up). There is also a pretty decent curry place on Old St called The Regency. Well, I say it’s decent but everytime I go there I’m generally a little sloshed, so can’t vouch to strongly for it. They did give me a free glass of port after my most recent visit mind you.

i think we need a pub called the devilled nipple round here
i got a free shot of sambucca in the bowler a few weeks ago, and have had a free round of drinks in the three kings before

Juvey, you might never have seen Freebird Burritos because it’s placed in front of the church, and you might be the type who recoils and ducks his head in horror at such a place. It’s the last stand (or first, depending on your direction), opposite Sofra. Go for the carnitas (pork w/juniper and bay) and wear a bib or clothes you don’t care about because it gets drippy. Dammit, I deliberately didn’t have a burrito today because I’m trying to cut back, and here you go making me talk about them. I think I ought to head out there and get a 2nd lunch…
