Let’s all read the same novel then meet up to compare notes and drink beer! This time we’re going to read John Kennedy Toole’s A Confederacy of Dunces. Please join us on Wednesday 5th September for some drinking, some talking bollocks about books and some more drinking …
The venue:- a slightly shabby rooftop bar in Saint Georges Hotel ion Regent St (opposite The Langham). Not too expensive and does a nice line in nibbles and panoramic views of west London.
PS. Last time, we read The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood: prompting debate on the bloodthirstiness and parenting skills of Ancient Greek royalty, Atwood’s feminist characterisation of Penelope, and the reincarnation of Odysseus as Napoleon! Oh, and we also talked about art, politics and t-shirts – all washed down with a rather nice Fleurie and a stunning sunset. Top result for a bunch of strangers off the interweb :-)

Dammit, I’ll be in Geneva. But I’ll get the book anyway and read it on the train in an attempt at solidarity!

Oops! Sorry Bagelmouse – and there I was, thinking I was being clever by organising it for September. Glad you’ll be with us in spirit :)
Thanks for the map Purpaboo!

My tender skin can’t handle being exposed to southern European sun in August. swoons Lawks, someone pass me smelling salts…
Yeah, I’m only avoiding the September rush at work :-) I’ll be there for the one after! (Hopefully.)

premiumI’m put right off attending by my addiction to nicotine. It’s a very inconvenient joint for a er…joint. Although it will undoubtedly benefit from being smoke free, even if that does make it less like a Sweeney-style strip club. Which I like, of course.

That is such a wicked book. If I wasn’t so busy I would have come along…

It’ll be my first bookclub, but I’m in – just started reading this at the weekend and loving it!

Willster – you can always suggest an alternative venue….

I read this book a few years ago, I’m not sure I remember enough detail to discuss it at length but I don’t have it any longer. I might have to actually go to the library and get it out. I’ve had a card for a year now and never used it. I’m not sure I can read it again anyway, when I read it before I remember having to put the book down Ignatius irritated me so badly.

Oooh Rin – a bit of irritation will spice up the discussion nicely – please have another go :-)
Richo, you are very welcome as are all FCLers – we are the nicest book group you could ever wish to meet.

Bump!
I haven’t even bought the book yet…. better get cracking!
Posted over 2 years ago by agox

Do – I keep chuckling on the tube whilst reading it…

I bought the book, and I’ve lost it.
The book that is…

I just looked up “pyloric valve” in wikipedia and it refers to the cultural significance of said body-part in A Confederacy of Dunces… though it doesn’t say that what keeps happening to Ignatius is actually physically possible.
I’m only a quarter of the way through but it’s a slim volume, you’ll be able to finish it easily before next Wednesday agox…

have just finished. Will not say too much and save the ‘pithy’ debate for next week – but what a book – loved it!

Hmmm – it’s going to be touch-and-go whether I finish it in time – tube strike is limiting my reading time. (btw, where does “touch and go” come from ??)
Looking forward to the pithy, possibly gassy, bit tomorrow anyway – I’ll bring my trusty orange feather boa so you know it’s me :-)
