Can anyone recommend a good choir?

I’ve been saying for years that I’d like to join a choir again, but haven’t managed to get off my arse and do so yet. Part of my problem is that the last one I joined was really snooty and no fun at all – I lasted a term before bailing out.

Really, I’d like a choir that has a good standard (I read music and would like to be challenged a bit) but is also friendly, sociable AND based somewhere I can get to reasonably easily (I’m in Kilburn). Oh, and also one that doesn’t mind when I miss rehearsals because I’m away on tour.

Hmm – I’m thinking this might be a taller order than first suspected. Still, if anyone can come up with good suggestions I’m thinking it’s probably you lovely lot. What say you?

I can recommend just such a choir, that I first heard about on LbL. It’s the SEDOS choir (attached to the Stock Exchange Dramatic & Operatic Society – don’t let the name put you off, it’s not all bankers). It’s fun and friendly but offers some challenging pieces, and it’s fine if you need to miss the odd rehearsal, though obviously while working towards a concert attending as many as possible is a good idea. The first concert is coming up on 20th March, so you might like to check that out before joining.

In terms of location, that may be changing for next term, but at the moment we rehearse in Covent Garden/Holborn area. Our current lovely choir director has to leave to go back to the US at the end of the month, so I’ll find out the contact details for her successor and post again here for those who are interested in getting in touch.

We could really do with more tenors, bass and some more altos, but the more the merrier generally.

I’m on the SEDOS mailing list, but I’ve not quite got around to joining. I’d like to, and I’m an alto. Can I have the contact details? Thanks!

Sorry for delayed response but you could check out the choir I’m in here: www.vocechamberchoir.org

There’s joining instructions there – and if you want to check out the standard, our next concert is on 10 June at the Grosvenor Chapel, South Audley St, W1.
