Banish the morons!

LBL used to be edited. I can only imagine the reams of crap our esteemed mods/eds had to go through to get to the nuggets of joy gracing our inboxes every Wednesday
FCL thread responses are not edited. In the beginning, everyone sort of kept to LBL standards, with thought through intelligently written responses. However, just recently it’s got to the stage where people are ‘LOL’ing about all over the shop.
Whilst FCL isn’t LBL, obviously, if it becomes just another chat site for morons, then I suspect a lot of people (the ones who have previously given it the well written intelligent content) won’t bother with it any more. And certainly won’t pay for it.
If editing posts is impractical (and I’m sure it is) then let’s edit people. Seriously. If you’re an idiot, you should be thrown out by the management – maybe warned first, but eventually chucked out. It happens in pubs, it happens in clubs, it’s accepted that it’s for the good of the many. Why not here?

I thought we were on a once a month timetable for moaning about how this place isn’t as good as LBL. You’re 3 weeks early.
I’m behind you 100% though. Even though I understand that diversity is the lifeblood of this city blah blah blah, I’m ready with my pitchfork and a flaming torch. Lets have a purge

Ahh… But mine’s slightly different. I don’t want LBL back; I just don’t want this place to descend into shitness. It’s not that different points of view shouldn’t be expressed at all – in fact that’s fantastic, it’s just that some people post such inane / badly written / idiotic crap in otherwise interesting threads that it diverts them away from being halfway interesting.

onlineI think we were supposed to avoid this trap through the invite system, but rather inevitably that seems to have been sacrificed on the altar of volume. The vast number of new sign-ups has had it’s ups and downs, with some of the new people adding as much value as anyone else. Let’s hope the intelligent posters sit it out; the idiots will wander off soon enough and post their shit elsewhere. Hopefully they will take some of the longer-established idiots with them.

Oooh, ‘ark at her, with her finely nuanced arguments and expansive cultural discourse.
I’d support the idea more if I thought we were as troubled by inane feckers inarticulatedly expressing acceptable views as we are by fuckwits poorly expressing Mail-lite opinions. And then there’s the third category, the verbose expressing the obvious, at great length. I like to think that’s my own particular niche. Sometimes I’m only typing to create the illusion of work for my colleagues, other times I find the rhythmic tapping of a Dell keyboard acts as a mental catharsis, the repetition allowing my mind to empty of the day’s detritus, and abstract conceptual thoughts to take their place. This is firmly in the former category, and anyone taking that last part to mean a polished gem was following will, by now, be sorely disappointed by yet another long, prolifically punctuated, sentence about nothing at all, general, specific or otherwise. Don’t blame me, I don’t even look up ‘til I done.

One man’s moron is another man’s erm, not moron. I’d love to see the ability to hide the posts of certain users so that they never have to grace my screen though.
Wait, you weren’t talking about me were you?
Posted over 2 years ago by eviltwin

No. I was talking about someone else.

Funnily enough I was just examining the very short paper trail to see how that special someone else got invited. iainaitch is at the start of it and he is not a bad man so we can all learn from this.
I forsee a WWII style poster in the Google ads
“Careless inviting costs trolls”

premiumIf you don’t like a response to a thread – black flag it. If you do it gets removed.
If you don’t like a particular user bring it to management’s attention. We will deal with the ‘problem’ as we have done recently – mentioning no names.

most sites are self moderating with those ‘report abuse buttons’ these days

I moderate on another site and it is pretty easy to block an ip address these days :)

You can’t ban by IP alone – you can end up taking out entire ISPs rather than just one person, and it’s simple to get around an IP ban anyhow. No need with sites that you have to be invited to, in theory!
By the way; smiley faces or no smiley faces? In LBL they were discussed, and scorned upon once, to never appear again. Nowadays they’re on the comeback. What with the morons and all.
Does using them make you a moron? I use them all the time, as I am quite sad like that, but have always refrained from putting them into LBL/FCL for fear of ridicule.
I’d quite like to use them where appropriate – but is it a slippery slope towards prgrphs lk ths? In fct cn we bn NE1 wot types lk ths?

onlineThis is like the end of Fatal Attraction or The Terminator, except instead of fighting off the maniac / monster, we’re just ignoring it. Keeps coming back though. I wonder if we’re doing the right thing and it’ll just go away. (not you Gizzard!)

black flagging away
But it’s not abuse necessarily, it’s just a bloody irritation that no-one needs, and makes the site less enjoyable. Someone’s wandered into our party with minimal ‘social skills’ (DYSWIDT) and we’re all glaring, some of us quite sternly, but they’re not getting the message. Doesn’t the host have a responsibility to take them aside, give them a talking to and then, if they don’t behave, sling them out?
Posted over 2 years ago by esotericbadger
premiumI totally agree with you EB but I don’t think there has been any suggestion that the host hasn’t, or wouldn’t, do just that. The point of being largely ‘self’ moderated is that the community finds its own levels of what is interesting and, in some cases, tolerable. The trouble is that for as many people who feel their ‘party has been invaded’ there are that many more people (with enormous social skills) who are concerned the site will become another forum clique. It’s a balancing act and sometimes people won’t like it. That’s just how it goes.
