Any suggestions for a good burlesque night?

I’ve read with interest that Burlesque nights are making a comeback; a friend of mine went to the Whoopie Club at the Hackney empire. It sounds like just the ticket for a fun night out, but I can’t find details of any upcoming events in London. Does anyone have any suggestions of websites/venues to try?

Don’t know of any comprehensive listings for burlesque but if babybat wants to learn the basics of burlesque, or how to remove a glove or twirl a nipple tassle then the Workshop festival opens very shortly with short courses. There is also a evening of burlesque films with live performances.

A number of clubs in London should satisfy the needs of a prospective burlesque fan. Some are about dressing up and having a good dance; some are about unusual cabaret performances; still others provide a good meal as well as a show. Eras from the 20s to the 50s are evoked across the various organisations represented in this list:

for modern burlesque and much more, I can heartily recommend the new strain of variety perpetrated by the lovely Medium Rare crew, who do events all over London – check http://www.mediumrare.tv for details

I went to a fab little burlesque night in a working men’s club in Bethnal Green the other Friday night (sorry, can’t remember the name or the address). It only cost a fiver to get in and most of the audience dress up in their glitziest costumes. The acts are a bit hit and miss but when they’re good, they’re great, and there are several disco intervals so the punters can have a dance. I think it’s the little sister of the Whoopee Club.

The Volupte Lounge in Holborn (www.volupte-lounge.com) is pretty good, with a variety of acts and a changing line-up – took my boyfriend there for his birthday. He definitely appreciated the gesture.

The best by far is at what used to be Raymond’s Revue bar and then turned into ‘Too2Much’ but is now called something else – it’s in Soho and is a gay/mixed venue that rocks. They have a good night on the last Thu of every month.

Hiya,

We’re holding a burlesque, comedy, magic and music night at the Wam Bam Club at Raymond’s Revue Bar this Sunday (March 30th @ 7pm). It’s also Time Out Critic’s Choice.

In fact it’s also a cheeky tribute to Raymond himself.

More details at http://www.wambamclub.com.

Gracie’s managed to get a few nights off from Volupte and after a brilliant performance at Glasto has finally mananged to fit us in. Her comic singing performances include a Marlene Deitrich, Madonna and errrr….... Susan Boyle. Whilst not singing Gracie likes to entertain the crowd by telling lewd jokes and errr undressing. However she does get all lonesome on the big stage all by herself poor little dear. Wonderful stuff.

Kiki Kaboom (2009 Best Newcomer at The London Burlesque Festival) varied peformances includes a classic, elegant striptease while she sings “I Just Want to Make Love To You” to her award winning “Chaverella” character dressed in appropriate bling and bad taste. Whilst not singing she is just as likely to be challenging her audience to a fight for “dissing” her or trying to nick your mobile phone (“finders keepers aint it”) Wonderful stuff.

Jay Weldon fresh off the Omid Dajili show brings you two new completely over the top singing characters exclusively starting off the show as “Fraulein-N-Furter” from the “Frocky Horror Show” and then after the break returning as “Jackie Blues” (err that’s Jake’s sister apparently) from The “Blues Sisters”. “Miss Kitty” performing her new character “Marilyn Minelli” exclusively at the Peacock. Our little Blonde Bombshell starts off all Marilyn Monroe like performing songs like ” I want to be Loved By You” and “Happy Birthday Mr President” but after the break returns as Lisa Minelli and starts singing hits from Cabaret. On Wow!

11th July

Andy Winehouse complete with JD & coke, tattoos, bee hive haircut and err hairy chest. When shes not banging out the hits she’s regaling the crowd with a running commentary on her life and eeer you guessed it …....her ex husband. But that won’t stop her from trying to chat up your boyfriend or falling off the stage for that matter! Hilarious and great songs too.

Madeleine De La Crème one of burlesque's hottest new talents unveils two wonderful sketches exclusively at The Peacock. Starting off as an embattled & unappreciated secretary what else can our Melanie Griffith character do apart from burst into song & shed her clothes? After the break Madeline comes back all Diva like as "Madeline Loren" (that's Sophie's younger sister) and once more bursts into song ... although I don't seem to recall Sophie wearing clothes quite like that last time I watched Roman Holiday! Great songs and floor show from burlesque's hottest new performer

There is a new night in London www.yesyesyesclub.com They do burlesque but also try to incorporate dance, music and circus acts in to the show too. I went to the last 2 shows and it was lovely to see acts that aren’t doing the tired rounds of all the other clubs. Lots of great new acts. I didn’t like all of the acts but most were very good indeed. Lots of lovely costumes too. I would love to perform with them in the future.
