Any advice on London hostels?

An Australian friend of mine is reaching the end of the tenancy at his current place, and is thinking of moving into a backpackers hostel. I lived in one for a year when I was living in Oz and had a great time. I had loads of friends to go partying with, and it helped me get a lot out of the travelling culture.

But I’m a bit worried that they might not be the same in London, as we do lots of things worse than the Australians. Has anyone stayed in a hostel for a while and lived to tell the tale? Are they a lot of fun to live in, or are they mangy and filled with bedbugs and unsavoury characters? Any suggestions of good/gay friendly hostels would also be very welcome.
