Am I just a common oyster card thief?

By borrowing my flatmate’s monthly travel card on oyster (not a photo one) to avoid extortionate tube fares, am I risking being fined / thrown into jail etc if I come across one of the spot- checks (which they seem to have in Brixton tube quite frequently?) Even if he has given me permission to use it would they assume I am just a common oyster card thief?

I’ve never been spot-checked at Brixton, I’ll have to look out for that. Strangely, the couple of times I’ve tried to lend my Oyster card to my gentleman, it hasn’t worked for him. He tried it at Clapham North once and at Waterloo, but no joy (ironically, he starts working for LUL next week and will get a free pass anyway). It hadn’t run out or anything, and worked fine for me. Are these blasted things self-aware now? What happens if you change your hairstlye, or you’ve got gloves on? It scares me, I tell you.

I borrowed my cousin’s Oyster last week and was there was a spot-check in Moorgate (of all places). The Big-Bouncer-Looking guy just scanned my Oyster and said it was fine. I guess because most of them are non-photo ones (unless you are using someone’s who is a Student or OAP), there should be NO Problem.

Oyster girl, you ARE just a common oyster card thief. Travelcards are non-transferable (whether they’re one-day paper one’s or fancy Oyster ones). Pay like the rest of us.

Technically, Oyster Girl, Oyster cards with travelcards on them are non-transferable, so you shouldn’t use anyone else’s, with their permission or otherwise. However, if there’s no photocard and it’s not registered, who’s to know it’s not yours?! ;-) Of course you’ll go to hell for your moral turpitude. You can avoid Lucifer entirely if it’s merely a pre-pay card – you can hand them round like Jehovah’s Witnesses do copies of Watchtower.

Oyster Girl! Go for it. Use anyone’s oyster card (with permission of course). TFL get so much money out of us as it is, a free bee now and again will do no harm I say!! To ensure even more you dont get nabbed by the TFL police just keep your picture card (thats if you have one travelling on national rail) with the oyster card. Unless they check the numbers at the back how are they gonna tie it up. The reason i’m all for it, is that I lost my oyster card with a monthly travel zone 1 – 6 on, with 3 weeks left, and for my stupidity of losing the damn thing, which I take full responsibility for, I lost about 10 days worth of travel – plus I had to pay for travel the days I didnt have my oyster card and until it was replaced!!! So.. get as much out of them as you can!! Oh, and by the way, always pay my way!!

As London Transport make it a feature of the pay as you go oystercards that you can give it to another person to use, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a desgree of confusion on this amongst both customers and staff. Doesn’t mean they won’t lock you up and throw the key for being a mean cheaty cheat though ;-)

I know this is an old thread- but I wanted to make a point about something:
“The reason i’m all for it, is that I lost my oyster card with a monthly travel zone 1 – 6 on, with 3 weeks left, and for my stupidity of losing the damn thing, which I take full responsibility for, I lost about 10 days worth of travel – plus I had to pay for travel the days I didnt have my oyster card and until it was replaced!!!”
Technically, the point of having your travel card on oyster and registered to you means, that when it is lost of stolen, you can have it replaced pretty immediately and the travel card put back on it.
