Ah, the politics of London...

One of the things that I have really enjoyed about moving to London (from bonnie Edinburgh) is that I have been able to go to various political meetings. I’ve been to a couple of Adam Smith Institute Events, a couple of Bow Group lectures (Oliver Letwin – unconvincing – and Polly Toynbee – confused old harridan), the Heslington Group, etc. It has been rather lovely having conversations with people who are similarly into the political scene.
As anyone who reads my blog – or passed by Paul and I having a heated argument at the meet-up – will know, I’m a libertarian and UKIP member (and I’m standing for their National Executive Committee). Paul considers UKIP a joke and, to an extent, I agree with him: however, they are the only party whose policy I agree with.
Anyway, I digress: I was reading through the controversial shooting discussion and it was, I thought, developing into quite an interesting general political thread. So, I thought I’d start one without the swearing kicking it off and where people could – to give it a London context – discuss interesting political events that they’ve been to.
So, on you go…

Oh, and first up is the imminent end of free speech in Britain, with the Proposal for a Council Framework Decision on combating racism and xenophobia which is due to be voted through without demure… er… sorry, voted on in the European Parliament today.
The FT has some details, and I have written about it too.
It will concern websites such as this, since there are specific articles on jurisdiction which cover “information systems”.
In other words, if this document goes through and anyone on Friday Cities “trivialises” genocide, or “incites discrimination”, the British government is not only obliged to prosecute – in the criminal court – the person concerned, they could also stop Friday Towers trading or even order the compulsory winding up of the company.
Don’t you just love it?

Is that the quickest instance of the fulfillment of Godwin’s Law ever, I wonder? ;-)

DK – we have had a couple of ‘interesting political threads’ – viz. Ethical Tuxedos and my very own Roman shops one. The thing is, neither of them were really meant to be overtly political, they then got interestingly political, and quite quickly disintegrated into ‘you said that’, ‘no I didn’t, I said this. You said that, you twat’, ‘Twat am I? Least I’m not a nazi’, ‘nazi indeed – stalin…’ right/left slanging matches.

Linear threads like we have here are terrible for any sort of in-depth debate/discussion. It’s practically impossible to get back on topic once a thread’s wandered, it’s hard to follow multiple strands of an argument, only the most recent points get replied to, and it’s difficult to respond to specific posts. It’s also too easy to bludgeon through your opponents arguments just by sheer volume of typing. This style of board is much more apt for just calling people Nazis.

I prefer facist as a meaningless insult. It reminds me of The Young Ones.

is there room for complete dislike of politics per se, or is that called ‘apathy, feudalism and ignorance’..?

On this thread? Unlikely I would imagine…
Well, I had a personal first: my blog campaign against the EU Xenophobia framework led to my being interviewed and mentioned on the front page of The Telegraph on Friday. Can Z-list celebrity status be far away?

Here’s something I like about London politics – the demos. You get every possible permutation of fringe group known to man. The Libertarian Socialist Badger-Eating Alliance’s 3 members turn up and sneer at the Libertarian Socialist Weasels-And-Stoats-First Coalition for only having 2 members. The People’s Maoist Army (all 5 of them) march with a massive banner that blocks the entire road. The Socialist People’s Front is represented by one bloke, and the People’s Socialist Alliance by an incredibly stoned couple. And that’s not even mentioning the anarchist samba band. It’s a pure joy for political trainspotters.

are you sure you’re not describing a scene from the life of brian ,tayto..?
interesting one on the old freedom of speech – my question is, is this a true danger, or is it scare mongering? I hate to use the phrase ‘devil’s advocate’ – ach, there, I’ve gone and done it…

You mean the Life Of Brian wasn’t a documentary by Mark Thomas?!

It’s really a question of how stringently individual countries decide to uphold it, but it has potential to be very scary indeed.
