A-Z Pub crawl - can you help make it less shit?

Hey all,
Please help me make this London A-Z pub crawl less… well, less shit. I’m missing U and X and could really do with replacing the likes of All Bar One and Wetherspoons with some less obvious and more enjoyable establishments.
In order to give participants a fighting chance, all suggestions need to be within stumbling distance of Covent Garden. The last pub crawl of this magnitude that I took on was The Westgate Run in Wakefield. Any difficult to find pubs need to be towards the beginning of the route, as do any that are a bit further out – the pints come thick and fast towards the end and there’s a far greater risk of fallen comrades.
So, over to you London – where can I buy alcohol from somewhere beginning with a U and an X?
All Bar One
Bear & Staff
Cork & Bottle
Devonshire Arms
Essex Serpent
French House
Garrick Arms
HogsHead
Intrepid Fox
John Snow
Kings Arms
Lamb & Flag
Moon Under Water
Nelie Dean
O’Neils
Punch & Judy
Queens Head
Round Table
Salisbury
Toucan
U
Verve
Waxy O’Conners
X
Yates
Zoo Bar

The Union Tavern in Clerkenwell, though might be too far? http://fancyapint.com/pubs/pub946.html
an alternative for A could be the Admiral Duncan in Soho
you could go the the Marquis of Granby on Shaftsbury Avenue instead of the Moon Under Water
instead of O’Neills, there is the Old Coffee House in Soho (it is a pub, not a coffee house)

beginning with U and X?
Uxbridge.

There’s Unions in Paddington and Marylebone too, might be easier.

Swap the HogsHead (urrrgh) with the Harp.

premiumTenuous, but there’s the Ten Bells (X Bells?) in Shoreditch, but it’s not been the same since they got rid of the strippers. If you’re willing to be even less strict, the OXO tower has a bar.
According to Beerintheevening, the only bar in London beginning with X is Xinc in Streatham, but that’s a) miles away, and b) closed down.

Apparently there is bar near Liverpool Street called XS. If the name is anything to go by, it sounds shit.

c) in Streatham

Many good suggestions – thanks all! Looks like we have alternatives for all the crappy chain pubs except “Y” – any more for any more?
AssumingVakant – I’ve tried Googling “XS” with no joy (although I didn’t try too hard). Do you know roughly where it is? A trip on the Central Line will be a bit of a challenge after 23 pints but hey ho!
Thanks Flippy for the tenuous “X” – it might well need to be called upon. Otherwise maybe there’s a clubnight or similar that starts with an “x”.

Personally I’d swap the Cork & Bottle for the Coal Hole, and swap Nelie Dean for Nell Gwynne.
X is going to be a challenge. Maybe a strip club in Soho starts “X-rated” or something equally subtle.

You’ll probably have to end up doing something like the Exmouth Arms.

Oh dear, it appears that I am a retard. I assumed the a-z list I found via google covered just London seeing as my search criteria was “a-z london bars”. Upon closer inspection it seems that XS is actually in Liverpool not on Liverpool Street. Sorry!

you could try Ye Old Cock tavern on Fleet Street, I went there a last week and it was quite nice inside
or Ye Old Mitre Tavern in Farringdon or one of the other Ye olds
or the Yorkshire Grey near Oxford Circus
can’t think of any X’s

Not sure I can have “ye” as it’s just in place of “the” but Yorkshire Grey is bound to be preferable to Yates!
Thanks Ben for Exmouth Arms – it may well come to that.

Ok, so I think this is as close as I’ll get unless someone comes up with an “x”? So long as these all serve Guinness (less gas) I think it’s acheivable too… with the right hard work and training of course! Would anyone be even vaguely interested in attempting it?

Richo: near covent garden … are there any truly decent pubs nr covent garden
er… you know we’re talking about a 26 pint pub crawl right? – I don’t think I can afford (or need) to be too fussy! ;o)

premiumBelgo’s, De Hems, Lowlander.
The Bear and Staff. (Ok, I’ll give you that one)

true true mr ian – blame my excessive intake of vodka last night for ridiculous response…
good luck – what’s your crawl drink of choice?
Posted about 1 year ago by Richo

Hate to be troublesome, but hasn’t the Intrepid Fox been shut down (disgracefully)?
Posted about 1 year ago by MEW

Guinness is the sensible choice for such work Richo. There’s less gas and it’s easier to down in one should the pace of 1pint every 30mins start to flag or indeed if I decide to simply neck it as soon it’s poured and use the remaining 25mins for a power-nap in the corner (a tactic that is often frowned upon but one that has served me well on previous occasions)
MEW, I think there are two Intrepid Foxes. Which one did you mean?
