A good spa in London: for the crippled pauper?

I wanna take my fella to a spa for his birthday (I assure you, if his winging about back/neck/leg/finger/eyelash ache is anything to go by, then he will be delighted with this most girly of gifts. And if not, it’s a good way to shut him up.)
So anyway -i’d like somewhere that isn’t too pretentious, is VERY reasonably-priced, and won’t make both of us feel like crusty cretins with bad t-zones and nuclear eyebrows cos we aren’t spa regulars; that said we are also not cavemen. Anywhere in London except West or really South will do. Oh and i’d like to get a facial (no not THAT kind) as well, again, cheaper the better.

there’s some general links here…..http://travel.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/travel/good_spa_guide/article2825697.ece
I went to the spa london place at bethnal green recently. Cost about £18 for a few hours to use the steam/sauna rooms etc. Had different types of weird showers, and a plunge pool. Not sure about what treatments they do tho but the general entrance fee was a lot cheaper than other places I’ve been to. The comments section slams it a bit but I found it to be far better value than the Sanctuary.

I really rated the Bethnal Green place when I went, but it was brand spanky new so all shiny and clean and am not sure how it’s held up since.
From what I recall, there are a number of hot and cold rooms and showers and stuff which you can spend a while lounging around in, then you can book treatments on top of that. Think treatment prices are pretty standard but Ellie is right, at £18, it is a bit of a bargain compared to what you’d usually pay.
Otherwise, if you’re looking elsewhere for a great facial, I really like Dermalogica facials in terms of price / efficacy. Ark salons (www.arkhealthandbeauty.com) aren’t bargain basement cheap, but I think they’re very good.

I’ve been to the Porchester Spa in Bayswater and it was cheap and very nice to lounge around and pop into the various steam rooms etc. It’s just been tarted up so should be even nicer than when I went. They have mixed days too, http://www.westminster.gov.uk/leisureandculture/sports/porchesterspa.cfm
