The ultimate flounce

The all-too familiar phrase “Well, something’s gone wrong deep within the bowels of Kudocities.” has never seen more apt than today, when we discovered pioneering site member and stalwart, Alan ‘Pottytime’ Potter has sadly passed away.

An early fan of all things KCL, dear pervy Potty was a prolific poster and loved it round here. He followed the metamorphosis of the site – like many of us did – from the days of London by London, through FridayCities, to the tumbleweed-esque-Milton-Keynes-on-a-cold-November-Tuesday place we see before us today.

A wordsmith, a cunning linguist, a joker, a toker, a man’s man, a lady’s man, a thespian, a drinker, a thinker, an accidental Jeremy-Beadle impersonator, an expert in offshoring and one time joint winner of the first, last and only KCL Scrabble Contest, Pottymouth was all about having a laugh, having a drink, and trying to squeeze a good time out of every situation, be it heckling an all-female comedy night or offering massage at inappropriate moments to inappropriate people.

Potty was the sort of bloke who’d tell the Pope a rude joke, offer him a massage and then wonder with child-like incredulity why 20 burly Vatican bouncers had thrown him in the Tiber.

He always ‘gave good thread’, winding so many people up, with an approach to women, foreigners and many other subjects, which seemed to have paused in the 70s. He caused many near flounces, and now – bloody typical – he has done the ultimate flounce.

Yet, when not winding people up, he was always first to offer help. Without often even knowing who people on the site were, he was full of advice, not even for kudos. He was genuinely kind hearted, keen to get a round in, and always thrilled by his daughter’s musical taste and artistic talent – even if we secretly thought it was only to catch a glimpse of her mates.

An unashamed perv, Potty careened through the site leaving a bunch of faintly bemused ladies, who were generally left massaged in some way – be it shoulders or ego.

Potty’s career was doing something mysterious relating to Vietnamese people for a big financial investment company. He had too much to talk about to ever get into the mundanity of his workaday life – choosing to talk about current affairs, theatre, film, books, science, repeating anecdotes and yes, tits and arse – anything but work. A trait to be saluted. He was as eclectic as KCL itself, and had an incredible general knowledge built up over years of compiling pub quizzes, backed by a voracious love of learning.

Some of his posts best reveal his character – from naked netball, ‘tit Monday’ and trying to shoe-horn a new rude word into the dictionary, to causing a semi-flounce by seemingly taking over the site Writer’s Group, to donating auction prizes, time and money to charity and for never quite getting how to do stuff on the site like posting images, links or posts that don’t offend, he was anything but dull.

And yes, he could be an offensive git, but he was our offensive git, and without dear Potty, Afroshag, or whatever number of other dodgy alter egos he had, the site will never be the same. Social networking in heaven just got a lot more entertaining.

Thanks Alan, for making us laugh, for making us angry, and today, for making us cry. It’s been emotional.

It would be extremely fitting if you left a donation in Alan’s memory, here

He’s gone to see the great War Horse in the sky. Hope he knows where he’s going.

Rest in peace Alan and thanks for the laughs and good fun.

I agree, Stella.

I’ll miss Potty. Not like you’d miss a limb or something, but, you know. A bit.

A couple of people have suggested a wake for Alan. A Pottywake, if you will.

I’d imagine it would take the form of a night in a pub, occasionally talking about crazy Potty, reflecting on the transitory nature of life and our all-too brief turn on this mortal coil, nodding profoundly when advised to live every day as if it were your last, then getting another round in and wondering if it’s too late to order food.

Who’d like to attend?

As far as I’m concerned, Alan was an all-round good egg who, many times, thrived on a thorough telling-off..

When they made Potty, they definitively broke the mould.

A sad time and a time to reflect for all who knew him or even heard of him as his fame went before him (sometimes leaving something behind).

Donated in his memory.

Maybe the forthcoming Quiz night on 16th Feb could be in his honour, so we must win and celebrate…. He’ll be watching….

Quite right. Excellent post. I’d be in for a piss up and a fund raise in his honour. Anyway, I owe him.

That was the thing about Potty. He was one of a kind. Whether it was a random shoulder massage, a hat that gave him the air of the bad guy from Indiana Jones, or the sudden donation of four bin bags full of yarn, which he had inherited from his mum’s sudden passing, to the graffiti knitting cause.

He laughed in the face of being ill the whole time too. I’m glad his blog is going to be around for people in a similar situation to find a bit of fighting spirit in.

I will miss him.

And I’m sure he’s getting a kick out of all these females saying they’ll miss him too. I half expect ghostly massages when we do have a few drinks in his memory.

I too support the toasting of Potty’s memory with some booze in the evening .

Great obituary. And, while I was never (un)lucky enough to be the recipient of one of his special massages, it won’t be the same without him. I agree that we should raise a drink to him some time soon.

Brilliant tribute, sad that he’s not around any more. I’m well in for a bit of drunken it’s-would-he-would’ve-wanted-ery sometime soon, though maybe not the 16th

I agree that we should all get together, have a few drinks and swap stories about Potty. Did I ever tell anyone about the time he told me that he wanted me to have all his Kudos after he was gone?

The Chelsea Potter? Somewhere in Potter’s Bar? Or perhaps a pub where we can ogle the the birds while quoting large chunks of MPFC sketches.
